Course Description

This unit specifies the outcomes required to manage the identification, acquisition, analysis and use of appropriate information which plays a significant part in the organisation’s effectiveness. Particular emphasis is on the development of systems and the analysis of information.

Details of Learning Activities

Classroom tutorial activities:
Regardless of the mode of delivery, represent a guide to the relative teaching time and student effort required to successfully achieve a particular competency/module. This may include not only scheduled classes or workplace visits but also the amount of effort required to undertake, evaluate and complete all assessment requirements, including any non-classroom activities.

Industrial Placement:
Students in the final stage of Advanced Diploma in Electrical are encouraged to undertake an industrial practice workplacement activity, which requires student to undertake tasks within electrical, electronic or computers sisytems domain within industry.
Task may involve activities linked to auto cad, software packages, project management, electrical or electronics troubleshooting, maintenance, evaluation and alnalisys, instrumentation and process control programming and, assistance in tender submissions and evaluations etc.

Report/Assignment
At the end of Industrial practice or work simulated activites students are supposed to submit report addressing some of following performance criteria:

-Development of systems to ensure that collection of information is timely,
adequate, relevant to the needs of teams, and is in a format suitable for
analysis, interpretation and dissemination.
- Analysis of information to identify and report relevant trends and developments to support the strategic planning process.
- Development of strategies to ensure that management information systems are used effectively to store and retrieve data to aid the decision making process.
- Preparation of and presented business plans and/or budgets in accordance with the organisation’s guidelines and requirements.
- Development of resource proposals in consultation with relevant stakeholders using all available planning information.


Practical exercises:

Work simulated activities on workplace information systems management through project management activities.

Student are required to apply the concepts, specific technical terms and procedures used in project management and workplace information systems.

Workplace information systems requirements and typical documents needed before the start of a project and those used to track and record project progress and costs is supposed to be listed and stated.

Students are supposed to discuss case studies in writing, including graphics, comparison charts and checklists, relating possible solutions and probable consequences.

Procedures associated with finishing and commissioning a project and updating workplace information systems.

Example of project may involve activities on portable appliances safety testing and tagging and updates on workplace information systems

Week 10:  Project management and workplace information system exercise

Week 11: OHS considerations including:
- OHS legislation principles and practice within the context of the organisation’s operations and plans
-health and safety procedures at the workplace relevant to employees including the use and maintenance of risk control measures
-training of all employees in health and safety procedures and regular updating of OHS systems
-inclusion of OHS in business plans
-inclusion of OHS in resource proposals

Week 12: Project management and workplace information system exercise

-data shared and retrieved in various forms such as in writing or verbally electronically or manually
-policies and procedures
-planning and organisational documents

-long-term or short-term plans for obtaining storing and retrieving information

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including written/oral activities and demonstration of practical skills to the relevant industry standards. Participants are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment activities to their teacher/assessor. Feedback will be provided throughout the course.


Assessment Tasks

Project/report ( 2500 words) : 50%

Describing the principles and concepts of workplace information systems related to a specific project or process, including typical documents required and procedures associated with commissioning and finishing a project.
