Course Description

This course introduces students to the skills required to undertake research into different concepts and theories of creativity, and to apply those to a particular field of endeavour.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, practical project work and through the application of learned skills.


Assessment Tasks

Looking at the work of various artists from a range of traditions and disciplines to determine approaches and attitudes to the creative process in general. Through class discussions - culminating in formative and summative assessment tasks – students should be able to identify and investigate aspects of creativity/creative process that will illuminate their thinking around their own creative practice

There are two parts to this assessment; Formative part 1 and Formative part 2

Formative part 1 will be based on the Investigating artists – workshops sessions. Discussion of the work of three artists over three sessions into their approaches to creativity and overall creative process. One of these artists/sessions will need to be documented and explored further as your formative assessment part 1 Due: Week 9

Formative part 2 will be based on the a presentation and subsequent discussion on the progress of your summative assessment part A ‘Research and present a theory of creativity and/or the creative process’ Due: week 10

Assessment will involve practical exercises, knowledge assessment tasks and practical group projects.

Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this unit are graded.

To demonstrate competency in this course you need to complete each one of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard.
You must submit all pieces of assessment in order for your competency to be assessed in this course.

Formative (ungraded):
Week 4: Describe three theories of creativity - presentation & written version.
a) Conduct a research project into a past, current and emerging theories. Find and compare three theories of creativity – one past (more than 30 years old), one very recent (proposed in the last 20 years), one emerging (currently developing – as published in the last five years). You must present your sources of information.
b) Think about the theories you have chosen to look until you feel you understand them. Then describe them in your own words.
c) Give your personal opinion of each of these three theories.

Summative:
Week 6: Apply theories of creativity as part of an innovative work environment proposal - presentation & written version.
Take a recent or current theory of creativity that you think could be applied to a work situation. Describe how it might be useful in terms for promoting innovative work and possibly help produce a more innovative end product.

Work Placement:

On occasion, we are approached by industry and given opportunities for students to apply for short term placements.
