Course Description

This unit Develop and apply creative arts industry knowledge develops the knowledge you need to understand and work within the Screenwriting industry. It also gives you the skills to develop and apply basic industry practices within the creative arts industries.  This unit is delivered together with Implement Copyright Arrangements within the course Working in the Industry (A).

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights to your writing tasks.
 


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessment.

Assessment 1: Forum Presentation and Report ( 40%)
(Presentations as scheduled throughout the semester)

You will work as a group with fellow students to organise and present a forum with industry guest speakers on topics relating to key industry sectors, the work of screenwriters and other key professionals, and current industry issues.

Your group’s task will be to:
 

  • Define and research your topic, select and invite appropriate speakers, plan the format and presentation of the forum, brief speakers and confirm arrangements.
  • Promote the forum to the class and to others in the wider screenwriting program.
  • Present the forum, introduce speakers, host or moderate, present audio-visual support materials and/or background documentation such as speaker bios, field questions, thank speakers.

Each member of the group will submit a brief individual report on the forum, explaining his or her contribution, and evaluating its effectiveness. Reports to be submitted in class 2 weeks after your forum.

Assessment 2: Industry Issues: Your Say ( 30%)
Assessed Weeks 15 & 16

The prestigious Australian Screenwriters’ Foundation is planning a symposium on screenwriting for their annual conference. They want you to present an 8-minute account of a particular issue related to the film, television and digital media industry in Australia from a screenwriter’s point of view.

You’ll write up your speech, making use of your own research from industry journals, for inclusion in the conference papers, with copies of any overhead slides you’ll be presenting to illustrate your talk. It should be no longer than 1500 words (excluding tables and attachments). You may wish to include topical references and jokes for the amusement of the audience.

You are invited to read your paper live to the conference, which will be held across a 2-week window late in the semester.


Assessment 3. Copyright and Legal Issues (20%)
Assessed Week 10

You’ll sit a written knowledge assessment task in class to assess your ability to identify sources of information on copyright, to recognize problems that arise from copyright ownership discussions, and your knowledge of practical application for rights and permissions, together with related legal issues.


Assessment 4. Class exercises (10%)
(Assessed throughout semester)


Grades used in this course are as follows:

80 – 100% HD High Distinction
70 – 79% DI Distinction
60 – 69% CR Credit
50 – 59% PA Pass
Under 50% NN Fail

Submission of Assessment Tasks
You are required to submit all written assessment tasks in hard copy with a completed School of Media and Communication cover sheet. You are expected to keep a copy of all assignments submitted.

Late Submissions
If you are unable to complete any piece of assessment by the due date, you will need to apply for an extension before that due date.

You will receive both spoken and written feedback on your work. Where appropriate, this feedback will also include suggestions on how you can proceed to the next stage of developing your projects.
