Course Description
This unit covers the competency to interpret Australian Standards and design simple timber structures consisting of beams, columns and connections.

Online face-to-face delivery of theory and industry-based worked examples on the:
• Calculation of the design loading for timber beams and columns using appropriate Australian Standards and industry drawings
• Analysis and design of simple timber beams in accordance with AS 1720 and industry drawings
• Analysis and design of axially loaded timber compression members in accordance with AS 1720 and industry drawings
• Analysis and design of timber tension members and industry drawings
• Analysis and design of nailed and bolted connections in timber in accordance with AS 1720 and industry drawings
Research
• Using the Internet research AS/NZS 1170 Part 0, 1 & 2 and identify the clauses required for the acceptable design loading for timber beams and columns.
• Using the Internet research AS 1720 and identify the clauses required for the design of simple timber beams, tension members, compression members and nailed and bolted connections.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment are conducted in both theoretical and practical aspects of the course according to the performance criteria set out in the National Training Package. Students are required to undertake summative assessments that bring together knowledge and skills. This unit will be assessed in the classroom environment using holistic assessment, based on typical workplace activities.
A project covering elements 1& 2 comprising a 3 dimensional building frame using industry drawings.
A mid semester test covering elements 2.1 – 2.3
An end of semester test covering elements 2.4 – 2.6

Calculation of section properties from first principles.
