Course Description

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to design a sewerage reticulation system to local Municipal standards and proportion the elements of a small sewage treatment plant, as well as to understand the principles of sewage treatment.

National Codes, Titles, Elements and Performance Criteria

National Element Code & Title:

EAC160B Design sewerage reticulation systems and small sewerage treatment plants

Element:

1. Identify the roles, responsibilities and powers of local authorities/agencies.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Relevant information is obtained from local authorities/agencies
in relation to sewerage reticulation and sewage treatment.

Element:

2. Define a job brief.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Relevant information is obtained relating to the standard format
and data required for design and specifications.

Element:

3. Design the horizontal alignment of a sewer.

Performance Criteria:

3.1 The sewer is located either along the streets or at the rear of
properties.
3.2 Easements are created where required.
3.3 The location of other services is considered.

4.3 The minimum depths of property drains and end fittings are
determined.
4.4 The vertical alignment of a sewer is fixed using appropriate
grades and depths.
4.5 Manholes, inspection shafts and pipeline ends are located.
4.6 Final invert levels and chainages are determined.
4.7 Pipe types are selected.
4.8 The location of other services is considered.

Element:

5. Outline testing procedures.

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Information is obtained relating to the testing requirements for
new and existing sewers.

Element:

6. Design a small sewage treatment plant.

Performance Criteria:

6.1 The functions and purposes of the basic components of sewage
treatment plants is understood and used to inform the design
process.
6.2 The principles of operation of different types of treatment plant
are understood and used to inform the design process.
6.3 The basic layout and size of components of a small sewage
treatment plant is determined using appropriate design
standards.
