Details of Learning Activities

Teacher Directed

Teacher led face to face and one-on-one instruction using over heads, screen projection and notes covering the basic concepts of CAD drawing and the operation of CAD software. This will cover each element in designated areas of underpinning knowledge and include:

Basic Operation of CAD Software

  • Opening up the CAD software
  • Creating an Autocad drawing template file within a drawing folder
  • Setting up dimension and text settings within a template file
  • Setting up basic layers
  • Creating a drawing file from a template file
  • Saving a drawing to a particular directory and folder
  • Drawing and placing elements
  • Placing text and dimensions on a drawing
  • Modifying and deleting elements on the screen
  • Measuring and checking element properties
  • Manipulating elements
  • Understanding paper and model space and how to correctly plot an Autocad drawing
  • Plotting an Autocad drawing
  • Shutting down Autocad using correct procedures

Produce Basic Engineering Drawings to AS1100 and Industry Standards

In a computer lab using CAD software, adhering to AS1100 standards and conventions, prepare two dimensional drawings of simple engineering parts based on industry standards and expectations. Activities include drawing:

  • Basic shapes
  • Title Blocks at A2, A3 and A4 size
  • A Steel Flange
  • North points
  • Section and Detail Marks
  • Steel Sections of Structural beams
  • A Brass Block
  • A test on a simple engineering bracket

Student Self Direction

Using the internet students will research AS1100 from Standards Online to obtain and understanding of engineering principles, conventions and drawing practices. Students are encouraged to view and analyse a variety of real-life projects and associated drawings to increase their understanding of the standards expected in an engineering office.
