Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to ensure that the business or project complies with the relevant legislative and regulatory requirements. It covers the skills needed by those setting up and managing the legal and administrative aspects of businesses, and projects a cultural industry context.

Details of Learning Activities

Classes wil be in seminar format in the Swansron Academic Building. Consult timetable for room and times

Students will need materials to take some notes such as laptop of pad and pen as there is no set textbook for this course.  The week’s topics are in the week by week below.  There may be further information about topics on Blackboard.  Students will have references provided to review material presented in the context of a published commercial law textbook.  There will be review notes on blackboard for each week’s topics.

Classes will consist of a  short lecture on the week’s topic where you should take notes and ask questions.  There will be a back and forth session on legal topics of interest, especially what’s in the media this week.  A case study similar to the assessment work willbe unpacked for legal implications and there will be an exploratory session using the internet.  Please bring a laptop as some classrooms have only one terminal.

Overview of Assessment

Students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.

Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including assignments, journals, presentation and written or test. Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.
 


Assessment Tasks

This course has 3 assessments, students must be deemed competent in each assessment to pass the subject.

Legal Research Activity Individual response of 1200 words which will include 200 words on the research process, how and where resources were found and how useful they were.

Take home assignment based on visits to some of the courts in session.  The activity and the report will be done in pairs.

Submission Requirements
You should:
• Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date.
• Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
• When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship. You must complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work. On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work. An assignment cover sheet for submission of each assessment task is available on blackboard.

Late Submission Procedures
You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates.
If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days.

Resubmissions (VET Programs):
If you are found to be unsuccessful in a Course Assessment Task you will be allowed one resubmission only. Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission. The highest grade you will receive if your resubmission is successful is “CAG”. If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.

You must demonstrate that you have all the required skills/knowledge/elements in the unit of competency you are studying. You will receive feedback on each assessment task that will inform you about your progress and how well you are performing.

Take home assignment submitted through Turnitin where students will have a Puublic Relations scenario/project to consider and will answer specific questions related to legal risks arising from the project and where the students will be able to suggest alternatives to minimise or resolve problems following from those risks.
