Course Description

This unit covers skills and knowledge required to  translate transcripts of audiovisual recordings from source language into target language accurately and appropriatley for context and end use. It requires understanding of the purpose and potential use of the information, a high level of comprehension of spoken language and the context in which it is spoken, the ability to translate into the same register, and the ability to work between speaking and writing.

Details of Learning Activities

Students will work in pairs complete two simulations : one involving processing police intercept messages; the other will be a transcription of an interview between a community worker and a person undergoing drug rehabilitation for broadcast on community radio. Various learning activities will support students in undertaking the steps required to complete these assignments.

Assessment will be ongoing during the semester, and you will receive feedback on your progress. You will undertake a variety of assessment tasks and activities to assess your level of competence against key elements and performance criteria.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Simulated transcription assignment.  Radio station ABZ requires students to work in teams of  two to produce a full transcript of an interview of a former drug user who is undergoing rehabiltation.  The assignment is a part of a government community information campaign.  Students will required to complete each task under instruction from the teacher. Students will be assessed as COMPETENT or NOT YET COMPETENT for this assessment.  

Assessment Task 2: Students will work in pairs to prepare the transcript of a series of intercepted  email messages that the police would like you to translate into your LOTE for use by security intelligence officers in LOTE land.  Students are to  use the processes learnt in Assessment task One to make a strategy plan to complete the assignment  within the time limit of  15 hours.  The team will work independently of the teacher, accessing various resources, including linguistic forensic experts, to resolve problems presented by the assignment.  You are to complete supporting documentation and references   to demonstrate the skills and knowledge used in the process.  This assignment is to be submitted to the teacher for assessment at the end of the semester in week 16.  This Assessment Task will be assessed for academic grading  purposes.
