Course Description

This unit covers skills and knowledge required to prepare for assignments and develop effective work plan and develop resources for translating and interpreting assignments.

This unit will be taught in a cluster with the following units:

LANG5760C Negotiate translating and interpreting assignments  
LANG5772C Apply codes and standards to professional judgement

1. Analyse assignment information for planning purposes.

1.1. Confirm scope and nature of assignments, identify stakeholders and determine other relevant factors.
1.2. Obtain and analyse assignment documentation and related background material according to standard protocols.
1.3. Select and obtain tools and equipment to analyse up-to-date, relevant and comprehensive resources.
1.4. Consider assignment requirements and familiarity with topic and other relevant factors to determine planning needs.
1.5. Identify and resolve factors that may affect assignment outcomes.

2. Establish familiarity with topic and context.

2.1. Analyse assignment requirements and build on existing knowledge.
2.2. Identify areas requiring further research and seek additional information.
2.3. Access and develop assignment-specific resources.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be ongoing during the semester, and you will receive feedback on your progress. You will undertake a variety of assessment tasks and activities to assess your level of competence against key elements and performance criteria.

Assessment tasks may include, but are not limited to:

-teacher directed group activities
-practical exercises
-group discussions
-preparing assignment specific portfolios
-visiting/researching potential workplaces in preparation for an assignment and identify needs for preparation


Assessment Tasks

 Assessment Task 1: Students (individual or group) will complete a written submission where they respond to a simulated translating or interpreting assignment. They will identify and negotiate terms with the agency and create a workplan to prepare for the assignment. They will then write a short reflective report where they discuss professional development needs  (Elements 1 - 4) (This assessment will also assess Elements  in LANG 5760C and also LANG5767C Maintain and enhance professional practice.) This task will be assessed COMPETENT or NOT YET COMPETENT.

Assesment Task 2: written test on the content covered during the semester. This task will be also used for grading.

 Students must achieve a minimum of COMPETENT result in both tasks to successfully complete this unit.

Extension of time for submission of assessable work:
Circumstances may arise which prevent students from completing an assessment task on time. In certain circumstances a student may be entitled to apply for an extension to the due date.
Extensions of 7 calendar days or less:
Students seeking an extension of 7 calendar days or less (from the original due date) must complete and lodge an Application for Extension of Submittable Work (7 Calendar Days or less) form and lodge it with the School.
Extensions of greater than 7 working days:
Students seeking an extension of more than 7 calendar days (from the original due date) must lodge an Application for Special Consideration form under the provisions of the Special Consideration Policy , preferably prior to, but no later than 2 working days after the official due date.
