Course Description

This unit covers skills and knowledge required to use technology to support interpreting in visual or physical isolation, and to manage delivery of interpreting via communication media. You will take into account the constraints and advantages of the technology.

This unit will be delivered in a cluster with the following units:

LANG5780C Interpret in complex monologue settings
LANG5784C Interpret as part of a team

Prepare environment and participants

1. Prepare resources appropriate to communication medium and make necessary environmental adjustments.
2. Consult technical support staff to establish equipment conditions and access to become familiar with specific technology.
3. Undertake technical management and confirm the process and purpose of the assignment.
Seek information about people and context and identify issues which may affect the process or outcomes and take necessary action to address problems.


Adapt delivery to equipment

4. Effect introductions and confirm process of interpreting by telephone or video link and relevant roles and conditions.
5. Adjust volume and position of equipment for audibility or visibility and adjust delivery to be heard or seen.
6. Identify and use terms of address appropriate to the medium.
7. Identify physical challenges posed by the communication medium and make recommendations to address them.
8. Act assertively to address technological. problems


Manage Discourse

9. Adapt delivery to physical requirements and constraints of the technology.
10. Use open strategies to manage communication flow in a culturally appropriate manner

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be ongoing during the semester, and you will receive feedback on your progress. You will undertake a variety of assessment tasks and activities to assess your level of competence against key elements and performance criteria.

The assessment tasks may inlcude, but are not limited to:

- practical demonstration
- roleplays
- real or simulated interpreting assignments via communication media
- self reflective reports
- action learning plans.


Assessment Tasks

 

Assessment timetable will be advised during the semester.


Assessment Task 1 Practical Demonstration (using telephone/video-conferencing tools)
Students will be allocated a specific interpreting assignment and will be asked to undertake the assignment (in pairs or solo). The topics will include relevant community interpreting, legal or business settings. The students will be expected to handle this assignment as per the elements and performance criteria above. The practical demonstration will be observed by teachers and other students and feedback will be provided. Students will then prepare an action learning plan (template will be provided) addressing any shortcomings and will provide this to their teacher for comments/endorsement.

These tasks can be incorporated into the practical demonstration sessions in monologue interpreting,  dialogue interpreting or interpreting in pairs units.

These assessment tasks will be used for grading purposes.

Circumstances may arise which prevent students from completing an assessment task on time. In certain circumstances a student may be entitled to apply for an extension to the due date.

Students seeking an extension of 7 calendar days or less (from the original due date) must complete and lodge an Application for Extension of Submittable Work (7 Calendar Days or less) form and lodge it with the School.
