Course Description
This unit provides the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to design, implement and evaluate an individual or community oral health promotion program that addresses oral health needs with empathy and insight into behavioral, cultural, socio-economic, environmental and genetic risk factors.

1. Perform a task analysis to identify health and related oral health issues of an individual and/or community group |
Performance Criteria: |
1.1 Conduct a series of investigations and risk assessment tasks to elicit any cultural, genetic, environmental or socio-economic risk factors that determine the health needs, and consequently the related oral health needs of the individual and/or community group. 1.2 Perform an analysis of the collected data to assist with the recognition of oral health related issues pertaining to an individual and/or community group with an insightful approach to evidence based quality of care. 1.3 Demonstrate effective and empathetic interpersonal communication skills in the data collection and task analysis stage. 1.4 Socially inclusive communication skills are used at all times and demonstrated behaviours encourage a supportive environment that is conducive to establishing collaborative relationships. 1.5 Seek clarification of issues from other allied health care or social workers that the individual and/or group may be associated with. 1.6 Where data is collected in a clinical setting the surgery is prepared to cater for any predetermined special needs of the patient. 1.7 The individual and/or group are given the opportunity to express their concerns, perceptions and requests. 1.8 All task analysis procedures are conducted according to Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare policy and procedures and Infection Control policy and procedures. |

Performance Criteria: |
2.1 Relevant records are reviewed to eliminate any contradictions to proposed oral health strategies including nutritional and dietary advice, with regard to cultural, socio-economic and/or medical issues. 2.2 The content of the oral health program, with relation to policies, strategies and educational methodologies, are designed and developed to target the special needs of the individual and/or community group with an evidence based quality of care approach. 2.3 The individual and/or community group is consulted at all times to contribute in an active way to the decision making process. 2.4 The oral health program must be designed against a realistic timeframe and take into account the essential periodic re-evaluation of the individual’s and/or community group’s progress. 2.5 Realistic goals must be customised, designed and set to encourage the individual’s and/or community group’s level of motivation and self responsibility towards embracing positive oral health behaviours within their present capabilities and capacities. |

3.1 Effective interpersonal and group skills are utilised to effectively deliver an oral health program. 3.2 Information is delivered at a pace and style that will stimulate and support learning and understanding of the key concepts. 3.3 Content and scenarios used relate specifically to the needs, goals and values of the targeted group and/or individual. 3.4 Individuals are given regular opportunity to actively participate and clarify information. 3.5 Effective questioning techniques are used to evaluate comprehension and retention levels. 3.6 Correct instructions are given for the use of specific oral hygiene aids, and any safety precautions associated with the use of these are clearly given. 3.7 Regular review sessions utilising a variety of evaluation methodologies are implemented and feedback received is used to adjust or modifying program as appropriate. 3.8 Oral health techniques and attitudes adopted by the individual and/or group are regularly evaluated and modifications made where necessary, as an avenue of providing ongoing maintenance and review. 3.9 Methodologies used encourage the individual and /or group’s desire to adopt a sense of responsibility for their own oral health. 3.10 Methodologies and strategies are adjusted based on evaluative feedback, to meet the individual and/or groups needs and preferences, to support positive learning experiences. 3.11 Cultural sensitivity is executed at all times. 3.12 The oral health program is conducted according to the principles of Occupational Health Safety and Welfare and Infection Control Guidelines and quality assured work practices. |

- Analyse, interpret a patients medical history and available health information to prevent and/or safely manage a medical emergency
Clinical Practice 3 is conducted in the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne (RDHM).
