Course Description

This unit of competency describes the application of in-depth level of knowledge of medicine and pharmacology required to analyse, interpret and investigate a patient’s medical history and available health information in relation to dental hygiene practice.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Identify antibiotics commonly prescribed in dentistry and
their action
2.2 Manage, question and monitor patient administration of
antibiotics in accordance with clinic protocol and in
communication with the supervising dentist
2.3 Modify the dental hygiene treatment plan to
acknowledge implications of antibiotic cover

3. Manage the dental hygiene treatment of a patient taking prescribed, over-the-counter drugs or herbal medicines/remedies

3.1 Identify and classify drugs according to their action and
the body system on which they act
3.2 Identify and manage possible drug side effects related
to general and oral health
3.3 Accurately record all information obtained in clinical
patient notes observing confidentiality and noting
medical alert status if required

On completion of this unit you have developed an in-depth level of knowledge of medicine and pharmacology required to analyse, interpret and investigate a patient’s medical history and available health information in relation to dental hygiene practice.

A combination of learning activities have been designed to help students to achieve learning outcomes of this unit:

  • Facilitator led classroom based lecture and or workshop using PowerPoint Presentations
  • Written classroom tasks
  • Demonstration and classroom discussion
  • Group discussions
  • Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises
  • Clinical practice, peer evaluation/feedback session/completion of practical worksheets
  • Online learning resources accessed via myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard)
  • Self managed research to support completion of assessment tasks.


Teaching Schedule

This unit is scheduled for delivery as per the timetable issued on Induction Day and is also located on BlackBoard. The classes will be delivered, on level 3 or 2 of Building 154, RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne) or in the undergraduate clinic Level 2 Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne.  There will be opportunity for you to attend clinics off site.

Overview of Assessment

Before the critical aspects of evidence are considered all prerequisites must be met.

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

  • candidates must demonstrate their ability to apply essential knowledge identified for this competency unit before undertaking independent workplace application
  • this competency unit should be assessed in conjunction with relevant competency unit(s) in delivery of the Advanced Diploma of Oral Health (Dental Hygiene)
  • evidence must demonstrate the individual’s ability to apply their knowledge within the requirements of dental hygiene practice
  • consistency of performance should be demonstrated over the required range of workplace situations relevant to an identified work role

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.

 


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course, students will need to complete all the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard.

Assessment Task 1: Clinical practice with completion of logbook and Clinical Observation & feedback logbook

 

The Logbook and Clinical Observation & feedback Logbook is completed in the practical sessions.

Students will attempt the assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the HLTINF001 Assessment Overview. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT. 

 

Assessment Task 2: Written theory examination

This is conducted as per timetable. The written test will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions. Detailed information will be discussed with students during their attendance to lectures. 

In order to achieve a satisfactory result, student must score 70% of the overall mark. Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.
