Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required of the Dental Hygienist to interpret and classify periodontal health

Element:

1. Obtain information about the structural, clinical, histological and radiographic features and function of the periodontium

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Used specialised knowledge to associate microscopic characteristics and anatomy of tissues to the form and function of the periodontium
1.2 Identify and interpret the structure and function of the periodontium
1.3 Interpret radiographic appearance of the periodontium in relation to clinical appearance

Element:

2. Identify and diagnose the periodontal conditions with reference to the classification system of periodontal diseases

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Interpret periodontal presentation to diagnose and classify periodontal health
2.2 Use specialised knowledge to identify and record the clinical presentations of the classified periodontal diseases
2.3 Interpret implications and significance of periodontal presentation where severity of disease is outside the scope of dental hygiene practice for the purpose of communication and referral with the dentist and periodontist

3. Analyse and interpret local and systemic contributing risk factors in the pathogenic potential of periodontal disease in the host

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Analyse and interpret patient data to establish systemic and/or local contributing risk factors
3.2 Use detailed knowledge of the host immune response and cellular mediators to identify and record chronic and acute inflammation
3.4 Use specialised knowledge of immunopathology to analyse and interpret progression of inflammation and tissue destruction
3.5 Research current philosophy and theory pertaining to periodontal pathology and diseases by conducting literature and journal review

4. Identify changes in the periodontium from disease and the aging process

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Use specialist knowledge of the form and function of the periodontium to identify pathological changes to periodontal tissues
4.2 Use specialist knowledge of gerodontology to recognise and identify changes in the periodontium
4.3 Identify treatment modalities to manage variations in the periodontium

5. Provide maintenance therapy for dental implants

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Use detailed knowledge of dental and periodontal anatomy to compare and contrast the periodontium of a natural tooth with peri-implant tissues
5.2 Make informed decisions on the preventive treatment of dental implants with a in-depth understanding of osseointegration and biomechanical forces involved
5.3 Make clinical decisions and give special considerations towards periodontal instrumentation and patientmanagement.

On completion of this unit you will have developed the skills and knowledge required of the Dental Hygienist to interpret and classify periodontal health.


Details of Learning Activities

This unit is co-delivered in a cluster (Clinical Practice 4) in conjunction with TAFE015 manage patients with simple to moderate dental hygiene treatment needs, TAFE016 Use chemotherapeutic agents to manage and prevent dental disease, TAFE017 Interpret clinical data to classify periodontal health, TAFE019 Preform a nutritional oral health assessment and TAFE023 Provide dental hygiene care of individuals with special needs.

 

You must enrol in all five units delivered in this cluster and all learning and assessment activities will include the components of all competencies.

 

The learning activities have been designed to help students to achieve learning outcomes of this unit:

  • Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises

Teaching Schedule

This unit is co-delivered in a cluster (Clinical Practice 4) in conjunction with TAFE015 manage patients with simple to moderate dental hygiene treatment needs, TAFE016 Use chemotherapeutic agents to manage and prevent dental disease, TAFE017 Interpret clinical data to classify periodontal health, TAFE019 Preform a nutritional oral health assessment and TAFE023 Provide dental hygiene care of individuals with special needs.

 

The unit is delivered as per the timetable issued on Induction Day and is also located on BlackBoard. The classes will be delivered, on level 3 or 2 of Building 154, RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne) or in the undergraduate clinic Level 2 Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne. There will be opportunity for you to attend clinics off site.

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

  • candidates must demonstrate their ability to apply essential knowledge identified for this competency unit before undertaking independent workplace application
  • this competency unit should be assessed in conjunction with relevant competency unit(s) in delivery of the Advanced Diploma of Oral Health (Dental Hygiene) ·
  • evidence must demonstrate the individual’s ability to apply their knowledge within the requirements of dental hygiene practice 
  • consistency of performance should be demonstrated over the required range of workplace situations relevant to an identified work role

Assessment Tasks

This unit is co-delivered in a cluster Clinical Practice 4 (CP4) (Clinical Practice 4) in conjunction with TAFE015 manage patients with simple to moderate dental hygiene treatment needs, TAFE016 Use chemotherapeutic agents to manage and prevent dental disease, TAFE017 Interpret clinical data to classify periodontal health, TAFE019 Preform a nutritional oral health assessment and TAFE023 Provide dental hygiene care of individuals with special needs.

Assessment Task 1: Clinical practice with completion of logbook and Clinical Observation & feedback logbook

 

The Logbook and Clinical Observation & feedback Logbook is completed in the practical sessions.

 

Students will attempt the assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the CP4 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

 

Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

 

Assessment Task 2: Written theory examination

 

This is conducted as per timetable. The written test will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions. Detailed information will be discussed with students during their attendance to lectures.

 

In order to achieve a satisfactory result, student must score 70% of the overall mark. Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

 

 

Assessment Task 3: Case Study Presentation

Students will submit the case Study Presentation and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the CP4 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

 

Assessment Task 4: Case Study Presentation (oral)

Students will submit the case Study Presentation and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the CP4 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

 

Assessment Task 5: Special needs case study

Students will submit the Special needs case study and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the CP4 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.
