Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to observe the condition of the patient and gather information relevant to the case, according to a nutritional dental health preventive practice.

1. Determine the scope of the assessment and patient needs in consultation with the dental hygiene examination

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Establish patient’s purpose for consultation and identify
the symptoms experienced

1.2 Explain the nutrition assessment process within the
context of the dental hygiene examination
1.3 Diagnose and analyse cause and affect of identified
dental demineralisation
1.4 Diagnose and analyse cause and effect of identified
dental caries
1.5 Diagnose and analyse cause and effect of identified
periodontal disease
1.6 Identify factors likely to have a negative impact on
assessment in consultation with the patient and
implement strategies to minimise the effects of these
factors wherever possible
1.7 Define personal abilities, level of professional
competence and parameters of role to the patient
1.8 Refer patient to other health care providers where
their needs are identified as beyond the scope of the
dental hygienist, or the dentist

2.1 Seek patient nutritional intake using a 24 hour
reflective assessment or a 3 day diet diary in a
respectful way with all enquiries asked in a purposeful,
systematic and diplomatic manner
2.2 Collect and record accurate, relevant and well organised
information in a manner which can be interpreted and
analysed
2.3 Ensure information is treated and recorded in a
confidential manner

3. Assess nutritional data obtained against principles, concepts and models of nutrition for Australia

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Reflect upon clinical findings and relate to nutritional
deficiencies or high sugar/acidic foods/drinks against the
recommended daily intake (RDI) of nutrients (Australian
Standards)
3.2 Assess the reliability of data obtained and establish,
where possible, appropriate clinical correlation with
patient’s presenting condition
3.3 Use questions to clarify results and gain further
information in a manner relevant to patient needs
3.4 Determine need to carry out saliva and plaque pH tests
based on the integration of previously obtained clinical
data and history
3.6 Identify and minimise factors that may interfere with the
information gathering process
3.7 Identify, establish and maintain essential requirements
for infection control

3.8 Anticipate any potential sensitivities/cultural needs of the
client and adapt approach to take these into account,
while ensuring the maintenance of patient dignity

Learning Outcomes


On completion of this unit you will have developed the skills and knowledge required to observe the condition of the patient and gather information relevant to the case, according to a nutritional dental health preventive practice.


Details of Learning Activities

This unit is co-delivered in a cluster (Clinical Practice 4) in conjunction with TAFE015 manage patients with simple to moderate dental hygiene treatment needs, TAFE016 Use chemotherapeutic agents to manage and prevent dental disease, TAFE017 Interpret clinical data to classify periodontal health, TAFE019 Preform a nutritional oral health assessment and TAFE023 Provide dental hygiene care of individuals with special needs.

You must enrol in all five units delivered in this cluster and all learning and assessment activities will include the components of all competencies.

The learning activities have been designed to help students to achieve learning outcomes of this unit:

  • Facilitator led classroom based lecture and or workshop using PowerPoint Presentations
  • Written classroom tasks
  • Demonstration and classroom discussion
  • Group discussions
  • Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises
  • Clinical practice, peer evaluation/feedback session/completion of practical worksheets
  • Online learning resources accessed via myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard
  • Self managed research to support completion of assessment tasks.


Teaching Schedule

This unit is co-delivered in a cluster (Clinical Practice 4) in conjunction with TAFE015 manage patients with simple to moderate dental hygiene treatment needs, TAFE016 Use chemotherapeutic agents to manage and prevent dental disease, TAFE017 Interpret clinical data to classify periodontal health, TAFE019 Preform a nutritional oral health assessment and TAFE023 Provide dental hygiene care of individuals with special needs.

The unit is delivered as per the timetable issued on Induction Day and is also located on BlackBoard. The classes will be delivered, on level 3 or 2 of Building 154, RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne) or in the undergraduate clinic Level 2 Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne. There will be opportunity for you to attend clinics off site.

  • this competency unit should be assessed in conjunction with relevant competency unit(s) in delivery of the Advanced Diploma of Oral Health (Dental Hygiene) ·
  • evidence must demonstrate the individual’s ability to apply their knowledge within the requirements of dental hygiene practice

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.


Assessment Tasks

This unit is co-delivered in a cluster Clinical Practice 4 (CP4) (Clinical Practice 4) in conjunction with TAFE015 manage patients with simple to moderate dental hygiene treatment needs, TAFE016 Use chemotherapeutic agents to manage and prevent dental disease, TAFE017 Interpret clinical data to classify periodontal health, TAFE019 Preform a nutritional oral health assessment and TAFE023 Provide dental hygiene care of individuals with special needs.

Assessment Task 1: Clinical practice with completion of logbook and Clinical Observation & feedback logbook

 

The Logbook and Clinical Observation & feedback Logbook is completed in the practical sessions.

 

Students will attempt the assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the CP4 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

 

Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

 

Assessment Task 2: Written theory examination

 

This is conducted as per timetable. The written test will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions. Detailed information will be discussed with students during their attendance to lectures.

 

In order to achieve a satisfactory result, student must score 70% of the overall mark. Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

 

Assessment Task 3: Case Study Presentation

Students will submit the case Study Presentation and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the CP4 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

 

Assessment Task 4: Case Study Presentation (oral)

Students will submit the case Study Presentation and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the CP4 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

 

Assessment Task 5: Special needs case study

Students will submit the Special needs case study and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the CP4 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.
