Course Description

This unit deals with the high degree of knowledge, skills, judgments, values and attitudes needed to provide evidence based dental hygiene therapeutic, preventive and supportive services, and educational intervention to patients with moderate to complex periodontal conditions and disorders, within the context of dental hygiene practice and conducted according to occupational health, safety and welfare policy and procedures and infection control policy and procedures.

1. Establish and maintain an effective and collaborative relationship with a patient

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Demonstrate courtesy and empathy in all communication with the patient whilst developing and maintaining an effective relationship with the patient.


1.2 Promote trust and confidence with patients in all of the relevant work activities that are undertaken whilst respecting the patient‟s rights and role in collaborative decision making.

2. Prepare and present the surgery

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Gather and prepare all equipment, materials and instruments required for planned procedure catering for any predetermined special needs of the patient.


2.2 Follow manufacturer‟s instructions and guidelines when preparing and using materials, equipment and instruments.


2.3 Follow all necessary safety precautions during the preparation and presentation of the surgery.

3. Conduct an accurate periodontal assessment for a moderate to complex patient presentation

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Take a comprehensive and systematic medical, dental and social history to collect, collate and record data by:
 interview
 questionnaire
 observation,
 measurement
 examination
 radiographic procedures


3.2 Collect relevant clinical data to perform a periodontal health and risk assessment.


3.3 Discuss the process and rationale of data collection and recording with the patient.


3.4 Preserve and maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.

4. Formulate and validate a dental hygiene diagnosis and treatment plan

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Collect, record and analyse data findings and discuss with the patient and the supervising dental practitioner responsible for overall patient care.


4.2Formulate a dental hygiene diagnosis in communication with the supervising dental practitioner.


4.3 Develop a dental hygiene treatment plan using evidence based criteria, to incorporate treatment, preventive and supportive dental hygiene interventions, that are prioritized to cater for the patient‟s periodontal and oral health needs and takes into consideration the patients own goals, values and preferences.


4.4 Integrate the dental hygiene treatment plan within the overall dental treatment plan identifying the need for specialist dental referral if required.


4.5 Adhering to the principles of informed consent, the treatment plan is discussed comprehensively with the patient, who is provided with the opportunity to clarify issues and is informed of possible treatment outcomes resulting from any planned treatment. Consent and acceptance of the hygiene treatment plan is confirmed with the patient.

5. Implement educational interventions for the management of moderate to complex periodontal diseases and conditions

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Educate and inform the patient considering their needs, goals and treatment expectations based on evidence based criteria.


5.2 Deliver educational interventions at a pace that will encourage patient understanding and ownership of their periodontal and oral health status in relation to their overall health and well-being.


5.3 Provide regular opportunities for the patient to actively participate and ask questions to evaluate comprehension and promote compliance.


5.4 Instruct the use of specific oral hygiene aids, and any safety precautions associated with the use of these.


5.5 Evaluate and review oral health techniques and patient understanding/compliance regularly utilising a variety of evaluation methodologies as an avenue to provide specific maintenance.


5.6 Design educational methodologies to encourage a sense of self responsibility for oral health based on an understanding of (their) periodontal and oral health status and personal goals.


5.7 Adjust methodologies and strategies based on evaluative investigation and feedback, to meet the individual patient‟s needs and preferences.

6. Implement therapeutic, preventive and supportive interventions for the management of moderate to complex periodontal conditions and disorders within the context of dental hygiene practice

Performance Criteria:

6.1 Discuss proposed therapeutic interventions and outcomes comprehensively with the patient abiding to the principles of informed consent, whilst providing an opportunity to clarify issues, and inform of possible outcomes resulting from any planned treatment.


6.2 Provide selected and prioritized therapeutic interventions according to the dental hygiene treatment plan, patient expectations and dentist/dental specialist instructions, to manage, control and/or eliminateidentified risk factors.


6.3 Determine the need for pain control based on examination findings, observation and recognition of non-verbal feedback mechanisms and discussions with the patient, and proceed with any necessary pain control requirements.


6.4 Implement preventive strategies based on the patient‟s examination findings and risk assessment analysis to address poor oral health determinants.


6.5 Communicate and collaborate with the supervising dentist and if required, dental specialist, to consolidate and unify patient management.


6.6 Monitor and evaluate treatment outcomes of moderate to complex periodontal patient presentations and devise an evidence based maintenance program in collaboration with dentist/dental specialist for continuing oral and general health.

7. Identify the social and physical health impact of tobacco use to determine preventive practice management in oral health practice

Performance Criteria:

7.1 Research current literature on prevention and cessation of smoking to explore contemporary tobacco use patterns.


7.2 Analyse and evaluate the impact of tobacco use on systemic and oral health.


7.3 Interpret contemporary tobacco use by analysis of behavioural patterns in mechanisms of psychological and physical addiction.


7.4 Identify social factors influencing tobacco addiction of marginalized communities and minority cultural groups.


7.5 Analyse the spiritual and psychological crisis of Aboriginal Australia as an example of how people in distress are predisposed to substance addiction.

8. Provide empathetic brief motivational interviewing technique to counsel patients towards behavioral change for cessation of smoking

Performance Criteria:

8.1 Investigate patient history and examination findings to support the individual needs of the patient.


8.2 Communicate strategies to address tobacco use, prevention and cessation through brief motivational interviewing.]


8.3 Provide patient information on pharmaceutical aides that assist in tobacco cessation through recommended nicotine replacement therapies.


8.4 Identify and engage the relevant community support services for patient referral.

 


Learning Outcomes


On completion of this unit you will have developed a high degree of knowledge, skills, judgments, values and attitudes needed to provide evidence based dental hygiene therapeutic, preventive and supportive services, and educational intervention to patients with moderate to complex periodontal conditions and disorders, within the context of dental hygiene practice and conducted according to occupational health, safety and welfare policy and procedures and infection control policy and procedures.

This unit is co-delivered in a cluster Periodontology 2 (P2) in conjunction with TAFEHD009 Apply and remove periodontal dressings and remove sutures.

 

You must enrol in the two units delivered in this cluster and all learning and assessment activities will include the components of all competencies.

 

The learning activities have been designed to help students to achieve learning outcomes of this unit:

  • Self managed research to support completion of assessment tasks.


Teaching Schedule

This unit is co-delivered in a cluster Periodontology 2 (P2) in conjunction with TAFEHD009 Apply and remove periodontal dressings and remove sutures and scheduled for delivery as per the timetable issued on Induction Day and is also located on BlackBoard. The classes will be delivered, on level 3 or 2 of Building 154, RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne) or in the undergraduate clinic Level 2 Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne.  There will be opportunity for you to attend clinics off site.

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.


Assessment Tasks

 This unit is co-assessed in a cluster Periodontology 2 (P2) in conjunction with TAFEHD009 Apply and remove periodontal dressings and remove sutures.

Assessment Task 1: Clinical practice with completion of logbook and Clinical Observation & feedback logbook

The Logbook and Clinical Observation & feedback Logbook is completed in the practical sessions.

Students will attempt the assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the P2 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

 

Assessment Task 2: Literature Review

Students will submit the Literature Review and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the P2 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

Assessment Task 3:  Apply and Remove periodontal dressings and remove sutures Practical

Students will attempt the assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the P2 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

 

Assessment Task 4: Written theory examination

This is conducted as per timetable. The written test will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions. Detailed information will be discussed with students during their attendance to lectures.

In order to achieve a satisfactory result, student must score 70% of the overall mark. Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

To demonstrate competency in this course, students will need to complete all the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard.

  1. Case Study Presentation

Students will submit the case Study Presentation and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the P2 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

 

  1. Clinical (scaling) practical

Students will attempt the assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the P2 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.

 

Australian Dental Council (ADC) external examination

"The final assessment of the Advanced Diploma in Oral Health (Dental Hygiene) is the Australian Dental Council (ADC) external examination, which is conducted on level 2 (undergraduate clinic) of the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne as per the timetable issued on the Induction Day and is available on BlackBoard.

Students must be deemed competent in this practical assessment, which comprises of the graduate competencies of a newly graduated Dental Hygienist, refer to the Dental Hygienist graduate competencies located on BlackBoard".

The final assessment for the Advanced Diploma in Oral Health (Dental Hygiene) (ADC clinical assessment may only be attempted when all the components of the P2 Assessments outline in the P2 Assessment outline have been competed (this includes completed student evaluation/feedback logbooks and all the required clinical log books competently and P2 written exam has achieved a satisfactory result).
