Course Description
This competency unit describes the skills and knowledge required by the dental hygienist to manage individuals/groups with specials needs to improve and maintain their oral health.
It focuses on the roles and responsibilities of the dental hygienist in the dental team, with medical and allied health practitioners for the management of a patient with special dental needs within the community and/or private/public dental facilities.

Overview of Assessment
Before the critical aspects of evidence are considered all prerequisites must be met.
The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:
- candidates must demonstrate their ability to apply essential knowledge identified for this competency unit before undertaking independent workplace application
- this competency unit should be assessed in conjunction with relevant competency unit(s) in delivery of the Advanced Diploma of Oral Health (Dental Hygiene)
- evidence must demonstrate the individual’s ability to apply their knowledge within the requirements of dental hygiene practice

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.
Assessment Tasks
There are 5 assessment tasks for this unit :
1. Reflective essay
2. Oral presentation
2. Outline of details for the Oral health promotion program in a nursing home ( activity and evaluation will be conducted as an assessment for HLTPOP504C Evaluate a population health project)
3. Assignment: Case study
4. Clinical assessment: co-assessed with TAFEDH020 Patients with moderate /complex needs
Note: The Pass mark for the exam is 60%. Assignment will be marked as Satisfactory/Not satisfactory
Students may be given the opportunity to resubmit the assignment if there are minor amendment
to be made and this is requested by the teacher and approved by the co-ordinator.
Students are required to achieve a Pass grade in both tasks to achieve Competence for this course

The oral health promotion program will be undertaken in groups of 2 and conducted in a nursing home context sourced by the student group. The program will be evaluated (co-assessed with HLTPOP504C Evaluate a population health project)
Late work that is submitted without an application for an extension (see below) will not be corrected.
