Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor the organisation’s work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs as part of a small work team.

This unit applies to workers who have a key role in maintaining workplace safety in an organisation. In their role they closely monitor aspects of work associated with the safe delivery of products and services, and they have an important responsibility in influencing ongoing safety in the workplace. At this level, work will normally be carried out within known routines, methods and procedures but may also involve a number of complex or non-routine activities that require some discretion and judgement.

1. Assist with incorporating WHS policies and procedures into work team processes

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Use WHS legislation as the basis for meeting the health and safety requirements of a small work team
1.2 Assist in providing and clearly explaining information to the work team about the organisation’s WHS policies, procedures, programs and legislative requirements, including the legal duties, powers, rights, obligations and responsibilities of individuals and parties inside and outside the workplace
1.3 Assist in regularly providing and clearly explaining information to the work team about identifying hazards and the outcomes of risk assessment

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Implement and monitor organisational consultative procedures to facilitate participation of the work team in managing work area hazards

2.4 Engage with individuals and work teams to identify and implement improvements in managing WHS feedback

4.3 Identify and report inadequacies in existing risk control measures according to organisational procedures, the hierarchy of control and WHS legal requirements
4.4 Accurately complete and maintain WHS incident records in the work area according to organisational procedures and WHS legislative requirements

Details of Learning Activities

This course is not delivered in a face-to-face classroom mode. It is instead delivered online via our learning management platform (Blackboard).

A range of self-paced learning activities are planned for this course. The self-paced activities will be delivered through various technology platforms and may include your contribution to wikis and discussion threads, reflective journals, quizzes and interactive sessions.

Overview of Assessment

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must provide evidence of:

* implementing organisational management systems and WHS procedures in own work area
* understanding of and meeting WHS legal and organisational requirements as they apply to own work area and job role
* knowledge of procedures for identifying hazards in the work area
* knowledge of procedures for assessing and controlling risks to health and safety associated with those hazards according to organisational WHS procedures.

Context for assessment
 
Assessment must ensure access to:

* safety processes relevant to the area of work
* relevant information and documentation on compliance requirements, such as:
     * organisational policies and procedures, standard operating procedures and plans
     * relevant Acts, regulations, codes of practice, licensing requirements and standards
* relevant internal and external information
* appropriate office equipment and resources used in the identification and rectification of WHS compliance breaches.

You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Assessment Tasks

The assessments for this course have been designed to allow participants to apply their learning to particular simulated work scenarios and demonstrate their competence in a variety of ways.

TASK 1 WHS Quiz (Grading weighting: 5%) (Due Date: End of Week 4)

For this assessment task you will complete an online quiz. Questions will be drawn from the various learning activities. 

TASK 2 Workplace Scenario (Grading weighting: 45%) (Due Date: End of Week 8)

For this assessment task you are required to respond to a series of questions relating to 3 case studies involving workplace health and safety scenarios. The scenarios are focused upon work health and safety investigation, response and management skills. 

TASK 3 Workplace Project (Grading weighting: 50%) (Due Date: End of Week 14)

For this assessment task you are required to investigate work health and safety risk/hazard assessment within a business.

You must satisfactorily complete all assessment tasks in order to achieve competency.

Submission Requirements

You should:

• Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date.
• Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks (both hard copy and soft copy).
• Use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship when you submit work for assessment at RMIT University. You must complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work. On the cover sheet you must declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work. An assignment cover sheet for submission of each assessment task is available on Blackboard.

Late Submission Procedures

You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates.

Resubmissions (VET Programs):

If your Course Assessment Task is assessed as not yet satisfactory, you will be allowed one resubmission opportunity only. Your teacher will provide feedback detailing what you need to do in order to satisfactorily complete that task, and will set a new deadline for the resubmission. The highest score you may receive if your resubmission is deemed satisfactory is 50% of the total marks allocated for that task.

If your task is still deemed to be not yet satisfactory then you must apply in writing to your Program Manager outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in that course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as practical.

Marking Guide (Competency):

You must demonstrate through your performance in the Course Assessment Tasks that you have all the required skills and knowledge as specified in the unit of competency (course) you are studying,

Your submitted assessments are the evidence used to determine if you have met all critical aspects of the assessments, and if any critical aspects have not been met, then you cannot be deemed competent in this course.

On each assessment task you will receive feedback against the competency requirements for that task, and the outcome of the task will be recorded as either satisfactory (all requirements have been met) or not yet satisfactory (one or more requirements has not yet been met).

Only when all assessment tasks have been assessed as satisfactory will you be deemed competent in this course.


Marking Guide (Grading)

Only after achieving competency in this course will you receive a grade corresponding to your level of performance in the course.
