Course Description

In this course you will develop the knowledge and skills required to participate effectively in workplace communication.  Workplace communication includes communicating information about routine tasks, processes, events, or skills; participating in group discussions to achieve appropriate work outcomes; and representing views of a group to others.

Details of Learning Activities

Nearly everybody at some time in his or her lives will have a job. Having a job gives us a good feeling about ourselves and means we can be independent. We can learn a lot at work, from other people, about the work we are doing and it is an important time to learn about yourself and what kind of person you are and what you want from life. We will also cover some rights and responsibilities of adults within our community such as voting, knowledge of the government and what it means to participate in community activities.

Here is a list of some of the topics we will cover during the year:
• The world of work
• Choosing and planning an occupation and talking about career goals
• Discussing the rights and responsibilities of a worker
• Learning how to look for a job
• Communication and social skills in the workplace
• Following and accepting instructions
• Explaining problems and asking for help
• Feedback and cooperation
• How to work safely
• Following timetables and workplace rules
• The appropriate way to dress for the workplace and using the facilities at a workplace properly.

There will also be excursions throughout the year to help you learn more and see and experience things for yourself. It is important for you to attend those excursions.

You will be provided with a comprehensive workshop schedule at your first class in February that will highlight the different days of the week and the classes that are scheduled for this course.

To gain competency in this course, you are required to participate in and complete activities/tasks that are given during class time. Occasionally you will be asked to complete an unfinished project as homework or collect information in your own time to be used in class.

You will be assessed in a variety of ways, which may include:

- Project work
