Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required for workers in the health care setting to clean and sterilise reusable instruments and equipment and to maintain associated environments.

Performance Criteria:

.1 Follow safe work practices and standard precautions at all times in accordance with legislative and workplace guidelines
1.2 Dispose of sharps and sharps debris into a container that meets Australian/New Zealand Standards at the point-of-use
1.3 Segregate and dispose of waste according to organisation and legislative requirements
2.1 Maintain work flow protocols in instrument reprocessing area
2.2 Prepare instruments for cleaning
2.3 Select and safely use appropriate cleaning agents
2.4 Use cleaning methods that avoid the generation of aerosols
2.5 Dry and inspect instruments for damage and remaining debris
2.6 Monitor the cleaning process
3.1 Open and unlock instruments with hinges or ratchets
3.2 Prepare instrument trays in accordance with workplace protocols
3.3 Package or wrap critical site instruments in a manner that prevents damage to delicate items
3.4 Place the appropriate chemical indicator into packages as required in accordance with current Australian/New Zealand Standards and workplace protocols
3.5 Label packs with the contents of the pack and batch control data as required in accordance with current Australian/New Zealand Standards and workplace protocols
3.6 Seal wrapped trays with sterilizer indicator tape as required in accordance with current Australian/New Zealand Standards and workplace protocols
4.1 Operate the steriliser safely and in accordance with manufacturer instructions, legislative guidelines and workplace protocols
4.2 Monitor each sterilising cycle and record the details as specified in current Australian/New Zealand Standards
4.3 Maintain records for each sterilising cycle as required in accordance with current Australian/New Zealand Standards and workplace protocols
4.4 Unload the steriliser on the completion of the drying cycle to ensure sterility of items
4.5 Follow criteria for release of processed items as specified in current Australian/New Zealand Standards
4.6 Store sterile packs to maintain sterility in accordance with workplace protocols

1.Facilitator led classroom discussion and simulated demonstration of steam steriliser types/cycles N,S,B class air removal & steam penetration, presence of bioburden and the 8 steps of instrument reprocessing including loading of a steam steriliser


2.Facilitator led power point presentation


3.Small group activity - drawing and discussing development of design for an ideal reprocessing area with adherence to zoning, infection control, OHS 


4.Practical demonstration simulation activity in performance testing ultra sonic cleaning unit, monitoring load release,performance testing of class B steam sterilisers, chemical indicators, steam steriliser maintenance, packaging and wrapping items for steam sterilisation and biological testing
 

5. Small group revision activity  poster/mind mapping - scenario based problem solving/protocols in reprocessing issues i.e. wet load management,

5. Self managed research and completion of Learning guide to support underpinning knowledge and skills and to support preparation for written assessment


6. RMIT blackboard C3202 program access to AS/NZS 4815:2006, ADA Guidelines for Infection Control 2008 or most current version
 


Teaching Schedule

Block 2, day 4 - 7 hours

1.Facilitator led classroom discussion and simulated demonstration of steam steriliser types /cycles N,S,B class air removal & steam penetration, presence of bioburden and the 8 steps of instrument reprocessing including loading of a steam steriliser .  Performance testing class B steam sterilizer/cycles, application of standard precautions, use of an ultrasonic cleaning unit, performance testing of ultrasonic unit, monitoring and load release protocols, storage of processed items, equipment maintenance and performance qualification of steam sterilizers.


2.Facilitator led power point presentation 


3.Small group activity - drawing and discussing development of design for an ideal reprocessing area including all 8 steps of reprocessing


4.Practical demonstration simulation activity in performance testing of class B steam sterilisers, chemical indicators, steam steriliser maintenance, packaging and wrapping items for steam sterilisation and biological testing. Please note: students are not permitted to participate in the practical demonstration/simulation class unless they are wearing clinical footwear.as per information provided in the Student Handbook for practical class attendance. Failure to wear protective footwear will result in the student being rescheduled to attend the practical class at another date.

5. Small group revision activity poster/mind mapping - scenario based problem solving/protocols in reprocessing issues i.e. wet load management

6. Facilitator to provide classroom instruction on how to access HLTIN302B Learning Guide and power point presentation via blackboard C3202 program

Between block 2 and block 3 attendance- 18.5 hours

Student to undertake work based learning and clinical experience in instrument reprocessing in health work (dentistry) with adherence to ADA Guidelines for Infection Control 2008 or most current version and OH&S requirements.

Student to undertake self managed research and study to support completion of Learning Guide and consolidate underpinning knowledge for successful completion of this unit of competency.

Please note : students may need to undertake clinical experience at a facility outside their usual place of employment to gain the skills and underpinning knowledge required to meet all Elements/learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN302B. (Please refer to above listed Elements/Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN302B)

Block 3, day 5 - 1.5 hours

1. Written assessment (see assessment matrix as listed below)

Post block 4, but prior to student’s RMIT end enrolment date - 3 hours

1. Workplace assessment- on the job observation of student undertaking reprocessing instruments and management of steam steriliser including performance testing and biological testing (as simulated or oral assessment) as an integrated part of workplace assessment.

Total Nominal Hours = 30 hours

Overview of Assessment

A variety of assessments are incorporated in this unit of competency including:
• Observation in the work place
• Evidence of essential knowledge and understanding may be provided by: traditional or online (computer-based) assessment or written assignments/projects
• Case study and scenario as a basis for discussion of issues and strategies to contribute to best practice

• Staff and/or client feedback

Assessment Tasks

To undertake practical clinical demonstration class work and evaluation and or assessment students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

Please note these are also OH&S requirements for clinical safety.

In appropriate clinical attire(no jeans or tracksuit pants, no bare midriff, no singlet tops)
Fully covered in leather(not suede) clinical footwear (this is a compulsory worksafe requirement)
Hair to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
No artificial fingernails to be worn
No nail varnish to be worn. The wearing of henna is acceptable.
Short, clean fingernails
No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape
All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing
A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake clinical evaluation or assessment at the scheduled time. The student will be rescheduled to undertake the assessment at a later date.

 

Assessment Tasks


1. Written assessment comprising multiple choice and short answer questions block 3, day 5 or via appointment as scheduled with program Coordinator

2. Workplace Assessment post block 4 attendance but prior to student’s RMIT end enrolment date.

Assessment Matrix

Please note: Students may apply for Special Consideration as per the information provided in the Student Handbook via the RMIT Hub @ http:/www.rmit.edu.au/students/special consideration if they believe their ability to complete assessment for this Unit by the submission date has been affected by factors beyond their control. Special Consideration must be lodged prior to or within 48 hours of the scheduled assessment time or assessment submission date. Special Consideration is not automatically granted on application.

A student may be required to seek further clinical experience outside their place of employment in order to achieve the required Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN302B  ie. in dental practice that does not have bench top steam sterilizer or where a dedicated sterilzation service (CSSD) is implemented a student may find that external clinical experience is required to assist them in gaining the skills and knowledge in this learning outcome as per the Performance Criteria.


Student must present Student Identification Card to RMIT Assessor to undertake assessment.

Prerequisite for written assessment as follows:

Day 4, block 4 - class work = 7 hours
Attendance and participation to block 2, day 4 class work as scheduled in the student’s RMIT Training Plan or attendance to class work as rescheduled by the Program Coordinator

Clinical work based experience in the management of reprocessing of instruments in health work (dentistry)  is essential for achieving a successful outcome in this unit of competency

Written Assessment: block 3, day 5.

1.5 hour written assessment comprising multiple choice and short answer questions.

A PX result for the written assessment is achieved with a result of 70% or above.

An NYC (Not Yet Competent) result for the written assessment is managed as follows- Student will be provided ONE opportunity to resit the assessment.

Asecond NYC (Not yet competent) grade  will result in the student failing the unit of competency.  Re-enrolment incurring fees, a possible return to class work and completion of relevant assessment tasks at the time of the re-enrolment would be required to complete this unit of competency.

Prerequisite for workplace assessment: post block 4, but prior to student’s RMIT end enrolment date.


Attendance and participation to block 2, day 4 class work as scheduled in the student’s RMIT Training Plan or attendance to class work as rescheduled by the Program Coordinator
Full sign off of Unit HLTIN302B in the Student’s Workplace Training Record Book as evidence of readiness for assessment..

A PX (pass) result of 70% or above written assessment: block 3, day 5. or a PX achieved via the above mentioned.

Workplace assessment- 3 hours. Unit HLTIN302B is an integrated part of a workplace assessment at the student’s workplace. The assessment at the workplace will be conducted in adherence with Victorian OH&S Legislation and in accordance with the ADA Guidelines for Infection Control Document 2008or most current version of this document. Failure to meet these guidelines will result in cancellation or cessation of the workplace assessment appointment and may result in a student being found NYC in Unit HLTIN302B. 

The student is required to competently demonstrate or provide responses to (as contextualised to the workplace assessment environment by the RMIT Assessor) 90% of the required performance criteria/learning outcomes for this unit to be deemed competent in this unit at the workplace assessment.
To achieve a CA (competency achieved) result for Unit HLTIN302B ALL of the above listed criteria in the assessment  matrix MUST be met by the student in accordance with the Elements/Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN302B. See Student Handbook for further reference.

An NYC result for this unit at the workplace assessment is managed as follows;

The student will meet via scheduled appointment with the Program Coordinator (following written & verbal feedback from the Assessor to the student, the employer if student is on a  traineeship and the Program Coordinator). 

The student will be provided ONE opportunity to demonstrate competence in this unit.  Assessment method to be determined by Program Coordinator according to feedback provided and areas of assessment deemed Not Yet Competent.

A second NYC grade for the unit  will result in the student failing the unit of competency. Re-enrolment in the unit incurring fees, a possible return to class work and completion of relevant assessment tasks at the time of the re-enrolment would be required to complete this unit of competency.

This unit of competency is delivered against current industry standards.

A Learning Guide for this unit is available via RMIT Blackboard Program C3202 to all students enrolled in this unit of competency.  It is strongly recommended that students undertake self managed research and learning and complete this Learning Guide as a tool to support the development of underpinning skills and knowledge in this unit.  The Learning Guide is closely aligned to theunit  learning outcomes and the written and workplace assessment criteria.

To complete Unit HLTIN302B a student MUST undertake routine and consistent clinical experience in the area of reprocessing reusable instruments in accordance with the ADA Guidelines for Infection Control document 2008 or most current version of this document.  It is therefore incumbent upon a student to have a strong working knowledge of this document and it’s application in dental practice.

Students are strongly encouraged to use a variety of texts and websites to support their underpinning skills and knowledge for a successful outcome in this unit of competency.
