There are no formal pre-requisites for this course, however you will need to obtain a police check in order to participate in the practical placement and gain work in the sector as per legislative requirements.

Course Description

In this course you will develop the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance. You will learn how to assess the situation, apply first aid procedures, communicate details of the incident and evaluate your own performance.

1. Assess the situation

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Identify assess and minimise hazards in the situation that may pose a risk of injury or illness to self and others
1.2 Minimise immediate risk to self and casualty’s health and safety by controlling any hazard in accordance with work health and safety requirements
1.3 Assess casualty and identify injuries, illnesses and conditions

2. Apply first aid procedures

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Adopt a communication style to match the casualty’s level of consciousness
2.2 Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible
2.3 Respond to the casualty in a culturally aware, sensitive and respectful manner
2.4 Determine and explain relevant first aid procedures to provide comfort
2.5 Seek consent from casualty prior to applying first aid management
2.6 Provide first aid management in accordance with established first aid principles and procedures
2.7 Seek first aid assistance from others in a timely manner and as appropriate
2.8 Correctly operate first aid equipment for first aid management according to manufacturer/supplier’s instructions and procedures
2.9 Use safe manual handling techniques
2.10 Monitor casualty's condition and respond in accordance with established first aid principles and procedures
2.11 Finalise casualty management according to casualty’s needs and first aid principles

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Request ambulance support and/or appropriate medical assistance according to relevant circumstance
3.2 Accurately convey observation of casualty’s condition and management activities to ambulance services / relieving personnel
3.3 Accurately assess and report details of casualty’s physical condition, changes in conditions, management and response to management in line with established procedures
3.4 Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with privacy principles and statutory and/or organisation policies

4.1 Seek feedback from appropriate clinical expert
4.2 Recognise the possible psychological impacts on rescuers involved in critical incidents

Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities will take place in campus classrooms as well as in simulated workplace rooms that are equipped with equipment and facilities that are used in the Aged Care sector workplaces. You will receive training using current industry practices from trainers who are working in the industry. A range of educational resources are used including case studies, scenarios and practical information materials, audio visual materials, class discussions and practical demonstrations. Practical placement is an important learning activity and you will receive support, guidance and de-briefing from the trainers to maximise your learning in the work environment

This unit will be taught alongside other relevant units. You will be required to attend the session on the dates listed below:

CPR assessment will be conducted on Wednesday 6 March.

The final assessment will be conducted on Wednesday 13 March.

To support delivery of this Unit you will have access to the RMIT simulated home room which provides industry standard equipment and resources. In addition you will be provided with the latest information on current memos and updates from within the industry.


Overview of Assessment

In this course you will be assessed on the knowledge and skills that you have developed to meet the competency requirements of this unit. You will complete small knowledge tests throughout the course that ensure you are equipped to perform your job role in the Aged Care sector, and the second method of assessment is where you give practical demonstrations of the tasks required in the job role for this unit. These assessment tasks are conducted after you have had adequate preparation for the assessment and you will be supported through out the assessment process. Some of the practical tasks will be done in the purpose-built facilities at RMIT, others will be done in your placement in a workplace setting. The written knowledge tests are done at RMIT campus.


Assessment Tasks

On the first day of this program and along with appropriate training and assistance you will need to demonstrate the steps taken when implementing DRSABCD also a practical assessment of CPR on an adult, child and baby manikin.

You need to be competent in day one before you can commence day two assessments, some times held on day three.

Day two follows on from day one implementing practical demonstration on bandaging and a written quiz titled "Final Assessment Three"

The finale written quiz is conduted on Wednesday the 13 March
