Course Description

In this course you will develop the knowledge and skills you need to provide basic foot , skin and nail care to clients. You will learn how to prepare for basic foot skin and nail care, and how to perform basic foot skin and nail care. You will learn how to clean and store equipment and materials, and how to document client information about this.

Performance Criteria:	1.1  Confirm that prior assessment of person’s feet by relevant health professional has identified need for basic foot skin and nail care services which are appropriate for worker’s role 1.2  Confirm client requirement for foot care according to personal needs support plan 1.3  Provide a safe and comfortable setting 1.4  Gather necessary equipment and materials 1.5  Implement appropriate infection control guidelines
Element:	2. Perform basic foot skin and nail care
Performance Criteria:	2.1  Explain foot skin and nail care procedures to the client 2.2  Assist the client to remove and put on shoes, socks and hosiery, where necessary 2.3  Correctly position the client for foot skin and nail care 2.4  Perform nail filing according to personal needs support plan and using appropriate infection control procedures 2.5  Wash and dry feet according to individualised plan, implementing appropriate infection control procedures 2.6  Identify an indicators of foot issues requiring attention outside basic foot nail and skin care and make appropriate referral in a timely manner

Performance Criteria:	3.1  Collect, handle, manage and dispose of biological waste material according to organisation/setting guidelines and infection control requirements 3.2  Clean and store equipment according to manufacturers guidelines, setting protocols and infection control requirements

Performance Criteria:	4.1  Document basic foot, skin and nail care according to organisation requirements 4.2  Document any factors that indicate podiatry attention may be required and communicate according to organisation requirements

Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities will take place in campus classrooms as well as in simulated workplace rooms that are equipped with equipment and facilities that are used in the Aged Care sector workplaces. You will receive training using current industry practices from trainers who are working in the industry. A range of educational resources are used including case studies, scenarios and practical information materials, audio visual materials, class discussions and practical demonstrations. Practical placement is an important learning activity and you will receive support, guidance and de-briefing from the trainers to maximise your learning in the work environment

The final assessment will be conducted on Thursday 4 April.
You will be expected to engage in some homework/research activities throughout the period from 28/03/2013 to 04/04/2013

To support delivery of this Unit you will have access to the RMIT simulated home room which provides industry standard equipment and resources. In addition you will be provided with the latest information on current memos and updates from within the industry.

Overview of Assessment

In this course you will be assessed on the knowledge and skills that you have developed to meet the competency requirements of this unit. You will complete small knowledge tests throughout the course that ensure you are equipped to perform your job role in the Aged Care sector, and the second method of assessment is where you give practical demonstrations of the tasks required in the job role for this unit. These assessment tasks are conducted after you have had adequate preparation for the assessment and you will be supported through out the assessment process. Some of the practical tasks will be done in the purpose-built facilities at RMIT, others will be done in your placement in a workplace setting. The written knowledge tests are done at RMIT campus.

Assessment Tasks

 

For this Unit you will be assessed on your skills and knowledge in a number of ways. Most of the skills you need can be developed and then demonstrated within the classroom as you communicate with your fellow students, and in addition, particular scenarios will be provided by the teacher where you can show further competence to meet the requirements of the unit.
A further check of your skills will be included as you undergo your work placement, and finally there will be a knowledge questionnaire, Final Assessment Six at the conclusion of the teaching period (04/04/13) to to finalise your demonstration of competence.

The teacher and coordinator will prepare you throughout the program for the assessment tasks and assistance is available.
