Course Description

To develop an understanding of position on earth, time differences, distances and direction, the beginning and end of daylight, CASA maps, principles of "pilot navigation", navigation aids and fuel calculation requirements.

Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Completion of Module 1.08 Basic Aeronautical Knowledge (BAK) Examination, and Module 1.10 General Flying Progress Test (GFPT).

1. Recall and state various geographical terms and definitions.

2. Recall and state the various times and time zones, complete time conversions, extract the beginning and end of daylight and describe factors affecting it.

3. Locate and state selected information required from CASA maps and charts.

4. Calculate various aviation problems.

5. Recall and state the principles of map reading, for different situations, the methods of chart preparation, the methods of track correction and diversions, and fuel reserve adjustments.

6. Recall and state the means of identifying a VOR, NDB or DME, their principles of operation, their problems and how to use them as tracking aids.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including written/oral activities and demonstration of practical skills to the relevant industry standards. Participants are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment activities to their teacher/assessor. Feedback will be provided throughout the course.
