Course Description

This unit covers the competency to work safely in the financial services industry and follow sound occupational health practices at work.
It examines the legal framework; the requirements for policies and procedures, the obligations of the employer and employee, the roles of DWGs and OHS representatives.

The course also includes practical elements such as manual handling, computer safety, and risk assessment.

Performance Criteria:

1.1Health and safety procedures are applied at all times when carrying out daily work routines in the workplace.
1.2Safe practices for working with computers and other screen based equipment are followed at all times.
1.3Work is conducted within ergonomic guidelines.
1.4Hazard warnings and safety signs are recognised and observed.
1.5All hazardous materials and equipment are handled in accordance with manufacturers guidelines and specified safe handling guidelines.
1.6Safe manual handling techniques and safe equipment operation techniques are employed at all times.
1.7Work areas are kept clean and free from obstacles.

Performance Criteria:

2.1OHS issues are raised with designated personnel in accordance with workplace procedures, codes of practice and relevant legislation.
2.2Contributions are made to health and safety management in the workplace in accordance with organisational policies and procedures and within the scope of the employees’ responsibility and competencies.

Element:

FNSICGEN304B/03. Identify and follow workplace procedures for hazard control and other emergency situations.

Performance Criteria:

3.1Hazards in the work area are recognised and reported to appropriate people following workplace procedures.
3.2Workplace procedures and instructions for assessing and controlling risks are followed accurately.
3.3Workplace procedures for dealing with incidents/accidents, fire emergencies are followed whenever necessary.
3.4Emergency exits are known and kept clear at all times.
3.5Workplace emergency first aid procedures are followed.

Details of Learning Activities

Each week students will be introduced to the legal theory related to each topic. Examples of the practical applications within industry will also be discussed.

Students will take an active role by completing risk assessments and evaluations, examining emergency procedures, analysing policies and procedures, filing incident/accident reports, demonstrating manual handling and applying workstation safety lists to workplace practices.

This formative feedback will highlight to students areas in which they may need to do more work to achieve competency.

Students must complete all assessments and achieve a CA (competency achieved) in each task to qualify for an overall pass in this course.
Students will be assessed via an oral exam during class time. Students will be asked to demonstrate their manual handling technique, their ability to use a workstation safely, their ability to follow emergency procedures, as well as their ability to manage stress.

Missed Tests
If a student misses a test for any reason, they must complete a special consideration application. Please note that applications must be submitted through the online learning hub within 2 working days of the scheduled assessment.
It is expected that students will show their teacher the written receipt granting a deferred assessment as soon as it is received so it can be recorded.

Assignments
All assignments must be submitted using the faculty cover sheet for assignments. These are available from the foyer on level 13 or at:

If a student receives a NYC (not yet competent) for an assignment they have completed, they will be given the opportunity to re-submit the assignment to achieve a pass grade.

Late Assignments
Students seeking an extension of seven calendar days or less from the original due date must complete an application for extension to time, available at level 13 reception. The application must be lodged with your teacher no later than one working day before the official due date, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
