Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to recognise the core language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) demands of training and assessment, and to tailor training and assessment to suit individual skill levels, including accessing relevant support resources. This unit introduces trainers and assessors to core language, literacy and numeracy issues in training and assessment practice. Competence in this unit does not indicate that a person is a qualified specialist adult language, literacy or numeracy practitioner.

Learning Outcomes


The learning outcomes for this course will enable the learner to:

• address core LLN issues in training and assessment practice
provide evidence that includes:
• documentation setting out activities, resources and individual learning plans for a particular learner
• third-party observations of the candidate with a range of learners
• documentation of the use of the ACSF to determine LLN level.


Details of Learning Activities

All training undertaken in the course will be focused on Competency based training. Competency based training develops the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to undertake a job to the standard expected in the workplace. For each course in this program you will receive a result of ’competent’ or ’not yet competent’.

You will participate in class learning activities such as:
class/group analysis of issues, reading and discussing articles (paper and online) provided by your trainer, determining LLN requirements of courses and LLN levels of learner using ACSF, group discussions and working in pairs especially when assembling training activities, and listening to guest presenters.

At RMIT Work Integrated Learning (WIL) refers to opportunities for students to experience either real or simulated workplaces. WIL activities in this program include:

• Simulations of training and assessment work environments
• Projects completed in your own workplace.

Many students who undertake this program are already employed in training and assessment. Some assessment activities are conducted in a workplace and many students use their own workplaces for this. If you do not have a workplace please consult your trainer about alternative arrangements.


Teaching Schedule

To be produced as to each individual commercial clients training requirements, where this unit is included as a specific elective in the customised training program.  (example - four (4) x three (3) hour sessions)

Overview of Assessment

During the program you will complete assessment tasks in class which are listed at the beginning of each module.

Assessment also occurs throughout the program and includes:
• written work such as writing assessment reports and self reflections
• delivery of training sessions
• conducting workplace assessments
• participation in validation processes

There are also two workplace projects which you will need to complete. If you are enrolled in the Intensive program these must be completed six weeks from the end of the course.

When the unit is taken as a stand alone one, participants will be observed addressing LLN issues when delivering and writing a report after working with one learner.


Assessment Tasks

One assessment task with 3 parts:
• Assess ACSF level of unit
• Write a report after working with one learner
• Plan and deliver an observed session where you address LLN issues
