This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to use appropriate tools, equipment, software and protocols to install, operate, and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network.

Activities in this course aim to enhance your knowledge required to use appropriate tools, equipment, software and protocols to install, operate, and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network. Details of Learning Activities
This unit demonstrates the skills required for an entry-level network support position. It covers networking fundamentals, wide area network (WAN) technologies, basic security, routing and switching fundamentals, and configuring simple networks.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment occurs throughout the program and includes learning and assessment activities conducted in the classroom, online and in the workplace giving you the opportunity to practice and be assessed on what you are learning in a work context. You must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.
Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements, documentation, workplace activities, in class exercises, quizzes, practical problem solving exercises and presentations. Participants are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Assessment Tasks
Assignment 1
You will be required to complete an assignment based on the OSI and TCP/IP models.
Assignment 2:
You will be required, as part of a major assignment to design a network that will incorporate the following areas:
• Basic configuration of a router and router security
• Selecting appropriate cabling and media for a network
• Using different routing protocols such as EIGRP, RIP and OSPF
• Use of static routing
• Use Static addressing
• Subnetting and VLSM
This assignment will be apart of an overall major assignment incorporating the following courses:
Determine and confirm client business requirements
Install, configure and test an internet protocol network
Install, configure and test a router
Install and configure virtual machines for sustainable ICT
Create scripts for networking
An assignment brief will be handed out in class.
Assignment 3:
You will be required, as part of a major assignment to design a network that will incorporate the following areas:
• Basic configuration of a switch and switch security
• NAT – Theory and application
• DHCP
• Ability to troubleshoot the router/switch when problems arise
This assignment will be apart of an overall major assignment incorporating the following courses:
Support Small Scale IT projects
Install, operate and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network
Install, configure and test a local area network switch
Determine and confirm client business requirements
Install and manage a server
Install and configure client-server applications and services
Deploy software to networked computers
An assignment brief will be handed out in class.
Online Exam 1
You will need to complete an online theory exam. This exam is done using the Cisco Networking Academy, using the course Network Basics. The exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions. You will need to achieve at least a 70% pass to complete this exam.
Online Exam 2
You will need to complete an online theory exam. This exam is done using the Cisco Networking Academy using the course Routing and Switching Essentials. The exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions. You will need to achieve at least a 70% pass to complete this exam.
