Course Description

To provide learners with a knowledge of construction principles, practices and services commonly used in low rise residential scale buildings up to three storeys.

Learning Outcomes

This course will provide the learner to develop knowledge & skills and able to:
- Investigate, interpret and describe the effects which State, Local government and Service Supply Authorities regulations have on the design and construction of low rise residential scale building construction.
- Describe in detail some of the principles and practice of site evaluation.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of principles and practices of low rise residential site establishment as well as site preparation and excavation.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the types, principles, construction standards and practices of these structural systems commonly used in low rise residential scale buildings:
        - Footing systems
        - Floor systems 
        - Wall systems 
        - Roof systems
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the types, principles, relevant BCA regulations, construction standards and practices relevant to the design and construction of domestic stairs, balustrading and handrails.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the types, principles, construction standards and practices used in the installation of:
- Claddings to walls and roofs.
- Linings and finishes to floors, walls and ceilings.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the types, principles, construction standards, installation/application of:
        - waterproofing
        - flashings and damp-proof coursing
        - membranes in roofs, walls and beneath floors.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the types, materials, finishes, installation and standards related to the following:
- Windows including furniture and hardware
- Doors including furniture, hardware and frames
- Joinery including mouldings and cupboards 
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the types, principles, construction standards and practices of site works associated with low rise residential scale buildings.
       - stormwater drainage 
       - paving
       - retaining walls
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the disposal of rainwater in a residential situation.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the role of Service Supply Authorities, their regulations and the practices associated with the installation and coordination of the following building services:
       - Water supply
       - Sewer drainage
       - Septic tank and common effluent drainage
       - Electrical supply
       - Communication systems
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the types, principles, standards and practices for the installation of the following services in low rise residential scale buildings:
       - Mechanical ventilation
       - Fire Services
       - Heating and Cooling
- Apply the principles involved in Energy Efficient residential design and construction to residential scale buildings up to three storeys.
- Prepare construction details for low rise residential scale buildings.
