Course Description

The purpose of this course is to develop skills necessary to undertake basic construction of timber products using hand tools. This course emphasises construction within the context of design and construction of contemporary furniture.


Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Co-requisites: GRAP 5160C, BUIL 5374 and GRAP 5148C

Learning Outcomes

1. Students will be able to use hand planes to dimension timber.
2. Selection of appropriate measuring tools and the techniques involved in their use.
3. Development of skills and knowledge necessary for selection and use of appropriate hand saws.
4. Develop knowledge and skills necessary for use of hand chisels and gouges
5. Develop skills necessary for using wood turning equipment.
6. Demonstrate skills necessary for sharpening and maintaining hand tools.


Overview of Assessment

Students will undertake small set construction projects demonstrating competency in hand tool usage.
