Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to contribute to planning for efficient and effective production.

Details of Learning Activities

PLANNED LEARNING EXPERIENCES:
Theory & practical lessons, industry visits and team projects that focus on:
1. Students are to receive a simulated production order and simple sample for a product. Topics to be covered would include the product specifications, the quantity to be produced, the quality specified for the product, the fabric characteristics and performance, the machine and machinist capability of the company (use the machines available in the production class room), and all resources necessary to produce this product.
2. Theory on production planning & its purpose. From the information gathered from the production order supplied, students to work in teams to develop a production plan. They will need to take into account any restraints or potential improvements, and OH&S legislation.
3. Using the production plan that has been developed by students, produce or simulate a small production run.
Monitor and record the efficiency and effectiveness of plan and modify
if necessary. Prepare a report.

Week 1-2 - Project One
Introduction to Course & Assessment Requirements
Produce a flow chart of the Garment Development Process that is computer generated and submitted electronically
• Collect, analyse and organise information

Week 2-4 - Project Two
Research and investigate the various production processes in current use in the Clothing Industry.
Brief description of two production processes and submit electronically.
Visit an Industry Organisation and describe the production processes used at the company.
Create a flow chart and organisational structure of the company.
1500 word report plus presentation to class.
Submit assignment electronically.

Week 4-5 - Project Three
Production Planning Schedule – Computer Data Entry Exercise using EXCEL and research activities.

Week 1-15 - Project Four
Team Activity
Students to prepare a Gantt Chart (time line), working plan and produce a product using the appropriate machinery and processes.
Ensure that all essential documentation accompanies the order.
Presentation of Project by Teams.

Overview of Assessment

Tasks that have not been authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is necessary to demonstrate that you can:
1. Interpret/analyse data for production planning
2. Develop a production plan
3. Monitor the efficiency of the production plan
4. Ensure plan variations are implemented appropriately
5. Apply workplace health & safety policies in production operations
6. Maintain accurate records
