Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements documentation, homework, assignments, group and/or individual projects, in class exercises, written and practical assessments, problem-solving exercises, presentations, direct observation of actual and simulated work practice, presentation of a portfolio of evidence which may comprise documents, and/or photographs and/or video and audio files, review of products produced through work-based or course activities.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.  Students will be provided with feedback throughout the course to check their progress.

Assessment Tasks

Two separate assessment documents will be provided with details on myRMIT - (1) Group Project report and (2) Individual observation assessment by teacher.

In the team assessment each team member will be marked individually. You will be assessed from observation and peer feedback against several criteria including:
• Did you attend scheduled meetings, and on time?
• Did you meet deadlines for your allocated contributions?
• Did you accept constructive criticism and act on it?
• Did you contribute and share ideas and research?
• Did you participate in team activities and successfully complete all the tasks allocated to you?
• Did you treat other team members with respect?
• Did you contribute proactively to the team, or were you only reactive to others’ suggestions and directions?
Project Reporting and Deliverables:

Evidence of your project will be created and produced each week. Students of each project team will keep their own records under the supervision of their own Project Manager. The formally assessed Project report is divided into Parts A, B, C and D.

Project brief due Week 3 (this is NOT formally assessed)
Part A due Week 6
Part B due Week 9
Part C due Week 12
Part D due Week 15

Separate document with full assessment details will be provided.

The incremental report includes all competency assessment criteria and is evidence of the project management cycle, deliverables and finalisation and project review. The report is written by the students of their team. RMIT style and Harvard Referencing Business Report writing applies.

Assessment tasks need to be submitted in online drop box and in hard copies, if required by the teacher.

Various methods for individual evaluation will be used including contribution to wikis, discussion boards, team meetings, emails, communication systems as well as face to face questioning. All team members are expected to be competent in all aspects of the subject matter so that, even if you accept responsibility for one particular aspect of the assessment, you must know and understand all areas of the assessment

Marking Guide (competency):

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is based on current industry needs and the focus on preparing you for the workplace. Because VET courses are informed by practical application of knowledge and skills, they are based on a system known as ‘competency based training’ (CBT). So when you are assessed in VET it is about whether you are competent to do the job, as well as having a firm grasp on the knowledge and skills required to do that job, as opposed to traditional curriculum based education settings that are often based on knowledge retention.

You need to demonstrate you are competent in each element of the unit of competency you are studying.

You will receive feedback on each assessment task that will inform you whether you are competent or not and how well you are performing. Once competent in all elements of the unit you receive a competency grading.

Please refer to the Final Grades table below.

Marking Guide (Grading)

After achieving competency we then grade your performance in the unit; this gives you the opportunity to have the level of your performance formally recognized against industry standards and employability skills.
The grading is according to the following criteria:

1. Level of independence, initiative, enterprise and performance of the work task – you must demonstrate initiative in the identification and management of a project with specific outcomes (deliverables), meet the administration requirements and tasks, processes and resources planned to ensure efficient use of resources. You will be aware of legislative requirements and apply them where appropriate. You will be creative and provide innovative solutions to complex issues, choose appropriate systems to meet organisational needs and design and develop documentation and related processes. You will respond to new and changing circumstances to ensure accurate and timely outcomes.

2. Demonstrated breadth of underpinning knowledge and a willingness to continue learning – you will self-reflect on the project and on how stakeholders and audience special needs were catered for. You will plan and identify your learning needs and monitor and evaluate your training requirements. You will meet deadlines.

3. Techniques and processes, technology skills and problemsolving – you will use complex functions of various computer software to design and develop templates, charts, standard documents and user manuals. You will use electronic communication and produce written correspondence and reports using technology to manage organisational information. You will use problem solving techniques learned in the semester as it relates to team management.

4. Work organisation, planning and self management – You will compose specific written plans, set goals, prioritise goals and schedule strategies and delegate tasks in order to get the task done in a timely manner. You will allocate resources to ensure organisational requirements are met, collect, collate and analyse information using workplace business systems, develop contingency plans and strategise to meet stakeholder needs, manage all meetings and the project effectively through excellent time management and organisational skills. You will follow legislative and regulatory requirements to ensure the safety and security of the project tasks.

5. Communication, people networking, language and interpersonal skills and teamwork – You will communicate in a business manner, and ensure usability and compliance by the team when managing organisational systems and processes. You will relate well to a wide range of audiences in interpersonal exchanges requiring excellent negotiation and writing skills. Your documents will be complete, formatted, free of spelling and grammar errors, topics will be suitably addressed and content will be professionally presented. You will use teamwork principles to run your team. You will understand the expectations of each teamworker: competence, loyalty, trustworthiness, honesty, responsibility, industriousness.
