Course Description
This course develops the knowledge and skills required to extend artistic practice to explore and apply the principles of design to an artwork.

Learning Outcomes
This course will provide you with a focus on the acquisition of essential industry skills.
On completion of this course you will be able to:
• Prepare and maintain physical resources for the production of artworks
• Explore a range of design elements and principles both using traditional and digital techniques
• Produce both traditional and digital images
You will also have an understanding of:
• Occupational health and safety procedures
• Physical properties and capabilities of the most commonly used materials
• Techniques, materials and tools and the way they can be adapted and extended in the production of artworks
• Approaches to artworks and the work of key practitioners
• Elements and principles of design
• Historical and theoretical contexts (introductory level)
• Copyright, moral rights and intellectual property issues
Details of Learning Activities
Students complete workshops and projects that are both traditional (collage on paper, gouache on paper) and digital (Photoshop images).
Workshops are short tasks usually involving the investigation of a specific set of principles or Photoshop skills.
Students usually work from a given set of imagery
Digital submission on the server is required for assessment.
Projects usually last for three or more weeks involving a greater selection of imagery and individual direction.
Original artwork or printouts are required for submission.

Overview of Assessment
To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete the following evidence of assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessment. On completion of this course, you will receive graded assessment.
Assessment may incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of essential underpinning knowledge.
The ability to apply the elements and principles of design and which:
• demonstrates an ability to experiment and explore a design concept
• demonstrates an ability to identify and evaluate appropriate process and techniques to achieve a design solution
• demonstrates a command of selected advanced techniques which are consistent with the conceptual vision
• demonstrates a knowledge of materials and tools (both traditional and digital) and how they are used and extended
• work must reflect consistent interaction with tutors in the studio in order to be considered for assessment
Assessment Tasks
Semester 1:
The submission of three Workshops and three Projects
All Workshops and the Project 2b & 2c are submitted on the Server prior to the assessment week. All other work is submitted during your allocated day in the semester week starting on June 3.
A satisfactory assessment concludes the Semester 1 submission.
Students who present a ‘not satisfactory’ folio will be required to submit the incomplete Elements & Principles work before or by the November assessment.
