Course Description

During this unit you will learn about the workplace performance required by a worker to contribute to work health and safety (WHS) processes where there is responsibility for your own work outputs and possibly limited responsibility for the work output of others.

1) Plan and conduct work safely

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Plan work in accordance with relevant WHS
legislation, standards, codes of practice/compliance
codes and guidance material
1.2 Identify hazards as part of work planning and
work process
1.3 Address identified hazards prior to starting work
using judgement within defined scope of responsibilities
1.4 Report residual risk according to organisation
procedures
1.5 Report incidents and injuries in line with
organisation policies and procedures
1.6 Undertake WHS housekeeping in work area
1.7 Monitor own levels of stress and fatigue to ensure
ability to work safely and sustainably

Learning Outcomes


During this unit you will learn about the workplace performance required by a worker to contribute to work health and safety (WHS) processes where there is responsibility for your own work outputs and possibly limited responsibility for the work output of others. You will learn about your role in WHS in both a theoretical and practical sense by undertaking theory classes and actively participating in practical classes.

Teaching Schedule

The class is scheduled for delivery to the APPRENTICE group (DT1) and NON-APPRENTICE groups (FT1A & FT1B) on Tuesday February 3 in the Lecture theatre of Building 154 RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne) Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change. Delivery of the unit of competence (HLTIN301C/HWSS5655C Comply with Infection Control, is also scheduled for delivery on this day)

Following the delivery of the theory class, practical exercises will be undertaken in the laboratory.

Class schedules are detailed in the timetables provided on Blackboard (subject to change at the discrection of RMIT, in this event notification will be provided to your student email);

  1. FT1A - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
  2. FT1B - Monday, Thursday, Friday
  3. DT1 - Monday - Friday (2week block)


Practical classes will be delivered in the simulated environment at RMIT where the Teacher will provide demonstration and assistance as you construct the appliances. You are required to observe all WHS requirements as you undertake the exercises and when you are present in and around the laboratories.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed in a simulated workplace and under the normal range of work conditions.

You will be assessed on both the essential knowledge and the demonstration of essential skills through;

Completion of practical exercises - including detailed self reflection of each exercise
Completion of an assignment


Assessment Tasks

  1. Completion of an assignment that is issued during the theory session.
  2. All practical classes undertaken (I.e. exercises/assessments) require you to adhere to WHS requirements and you risk being deemed NYC if you do not operate within these requirements.


Assessment Matrix

The scheduled due date for the assignment;

  1. Apprentice (DT1) & Non-Apprentice (FT1A & FT1B): Wednesday March 3rd (The assessment process must be finalised and a result entered by July 1st 2015)

Plagiarism

Non completion or non-submission of compulsory tasks:

Failure to complete any or all of the compulsory tasks listed above will prevent the student from achieving a CA (competency achieved) result for unit HLTWHS300A/HWSS5707C Contribute to WHS Processes . This will result in the student not completing the unit successfully. NYC (not yet competent) will be recorded and re enrolment will be required to continue the unit/program. Fees will be incurred. Please note: A second opportunity for assessment will not be granted unless the student has applied for and been granted special consideration as per RMIT assessment policy.


Assessment Appeal Process:
The Appeals Against Assessment policy and procedure applies to all coursework programs in all careers. The appeal process is staged and students are required to follow each stage in order to ensure their full entitlement to appeal is available http://www1.rmit.edu.au/students/appeals


Students are required to support the learning outcomes this Unit with work based experience and/ or further self managed research to support positive outcomes in this Unit.


To undertake practical exercises and /or assessment students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

Please note these are also WH&S requirements for laboratory safety.

In appropriate practical class attire (Protective clothing for legs - if shorts, must cover knees, lab coat, safety glasses)
Fully covered in leather(not suede) footwear

Hair to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
No artificial fingernails to be worn
The wearing of henna is acceptable.
Short, clean fingernails (no nail polish)
No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape
All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing

A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake practical exercises or assessment at the scheduled time. The student will be rescheduled to undertake assessment at a later date.
