Course Description

In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required to produce simple visual illustrations of proposed product presentations and exhibition displays. It covers design elements, illustration techniques and colour schemes to produce illustrations that depict in situ product presentations and exhibition displays. It also includes consulting with clients to clarify available budgets.

Details of Learning Activities

In this course you will explore the use of drawing in the visual merchanding industry including 2D and 3D manual drawing techniques.

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to produce simple visual illustrations of proposed product presentations and exhibition displays.

It covers design elements, illustration techniques and colour schemes to produce illustrations that depict in situ product presentations and exhibition displays

It also includes consulting with clients to clarify available budgets.
You will use technical drawing equipment as well as produce freehand drawings.
This competency will be delivered concurrently and assessed with MKTG5862C ’Produce perspective drawings, plans & elevations .

Bring to class a vegetable e.g. Capsicum or pumpkin etc. Show product in situ.
Specifics. Using the vegetable as the starting point, you are required to use the features of the vegetable to design VM related structure/s – Kiosk, merchandiser, store, venue) Your illustrations must show a smooth, gradual & logical transition from the vegetable, to the final design. (Morphing from one object to the other) Mixed media, mostly marker. Transitions must be done in 10 equal steps i.e. “No sudden jumps”.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is on-going throughout the course. Assessment will incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of knowledge and skills.
The assessment tasks are:

The final task will be summative to provide a level of performance in addition to your competency.

Produce simple visual illustrations of proposed product presentations and exhibition displays. Demonstrate the use of design elements, illustration techniques and create colour schemes appropriate to the brand, promotion & merchandise.

Produce illustrations that depict in situ product presentations and exhibition displays. Consultation/s with clients to clarify available budgets & timelines.

You will produce a series of B & W, colour sketches using Copic markers, equipment & media such as paper stumps, cotton balls, pencils, pastels,. Produce drawings demonstrating use of correct scale & proportion, placement, height of objects.  Produce a range of design options for client feedback.

Brief 1: Produce a basic grey scale for reference/use in quick product sketches employing different line types & rendering techniques. Show products in situ.

You will produce Black & White tonal drawings of products in situ with store merchandiser considering scale, proportion, height, placement, multiple views, 3D, rendering, line work .

Drawings will illustrate specified aspects of a store, considering scale, multiple views, drawing layout and the application of text, lighting.

Brief 4: 1, 2 & multi point Point perspective drawings. Negotiate budget & timeline with client. You will produce colour & tonal perspective drawings of glossy products/jewellery in situ with store merchandiser considering scale, proportion, height, placement, multiple views, 3D, rendering, line work. At least one mannequin to be drawn in situ with product - correct proportion & scale. Include text and signage in perspective.

Drawings will illustrate specified aspects a small store, considering scale, multiple views, drawing layout and the application of text, lighting & shadows.

You will produce a series of sketches using the perspective grids to inform the correct proportions and views of the topics.

Brief 4. 2 Point perspective grid. You will produce a basic2 (vanishing) point perspective grid.


 

Brief 5. Fashion & accessory drawings. Include text and signage in perspective. You will produce illustrations of specified products & show them in situ with store merchandisers, considering scale, proportion, height, placement, multiple views, 3D, rendering, line work. At least one mannequin to be drawn in situ with product - correct proportion & scale. Include text and signage in perspective.
Produce 1, 2 & multi point perspective drawings. Negotiate budget & timeline with client. Include text and signage in perspective.

You will produce a series of sketches using the perspective grids to inform the correct proportions and views of the topics.

Brief 6. Demonstrating the techniques, skills & knowledge you have acquired to date, you will produce a design of a Visual Merchandising related structure/environment - e.g. display, window display, store interior or exterior including merchandise, kiosk. This will be achieved through a process of morphing drawings. These 3D morphing drawings must show a convincing, smooth, evenly-stepped transition to the final design concept. Drawings will be colour rendered and finished to a standard suitable for presentation to the client.
