Course Description

Show control systems are designed to store, play back and control audio, video and digital images as well as other inputs eg. computers or video servers. In this course you will learn the skills and knowledge required to manage the set up and operation of show control systems.

 1.1 Analyse documentation and information provided by clients or others about projects or productions that require show control operations
1.2 Discuss with relevant personnel ways of realising creative vision for projects from a show control perspective
1.3 Reflect on issues raised in discussions and develop draft plans for implementing show control that address creative requirements and take into account the capabilities of available show control systems
1.4 Reach agreement on plans after discussion with relevant personnel and revision of draft plans as required
1.5 Build trust and respect through effective use of communication skills and demonstration of professional integrity

2.5 Ensure that final show control operations meet production, presentation and installation requirements
2.6 Ensure that all work is undertaken according to health and safety requirements

Details of Learning Activities

 Out of-class self-directed learner activities for this course include but are not limited to: additional equipment practice sessions, private research at selected equipment websites and revision of notes to reinforce classroom content. These activities will be monitored during class through question/answer sessions.

Assessment Task 1 Client brief #1: The corporate gig issued
Commence working in pairs develop two briefs. Analyse, clarify and commence planning for show control operations based on the brief. This assessment runs over a period of weeks, through a development period and is executed in a simulated environment..

Assessment Task #2 : The theatre gig issued
 

 

 

3 Client Brief #1: The corporate gig
Develop draft plans based on available technology. Back-brief client, simulated pairs of students with client/vendor roles. Reverse roles to assess the second brief. Work towards reaching an agreement on the show and finalise scope.
 
4 Client Brief #1: The corporate gig
Further plan the show for execution.
  • Reach agreement on plans for show from discussion with client in role play scenarios;
  • Determine resource requirements - personnel and hardware;
  • Design and draw stage and lighting plots.
 
5 Client Brief # 1: The corporate gig
Performance Day:
  • Setup requisite hardware for performance;
  • Perform run-through of performance;
  • Adjust plans and equipment according to any issues identified during the run-through;
  • Perform run through and successfully execute the show in a simulated environment.
 
 
6 Client Brief # 2: Theatrical
Read, analyse and interpret a script and video performance of a script that will form the basis for all show control in this assessment.

Lighting - Incorporating and programming DMX cues into the show using DMXIS.

Using DMXI to trigger lighting cues as a Virtual Studio Plugin (VST) within Ableton Live

Using sound design and lighting cues - look at audio and how it contributes to a performance in terms of

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course involves both written and practical tasks. These include the development and interpretation of a client brief through to the successful execution of a show control performance for :

  • a corporate style presentation in a simulated environment
  • a mock theatre performance in a simulated environment.

This unit of competency is assessed in accordance with competency-based assessment. To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.

There are two assessment tasks for this course:

Assessment task #1
The Corporate Gig

To demonstrate competency of the required knowledge evidence for this unit, over the course of four classes, both in and away from class, you will complete a series of tasks and leaning’s to successfully execute a show control performance for a mock corporate presentation in a simulated environment.  
Issued class 2.
Due class 6

Assessment task #2
The Theatre Gig

To demonstrate competency of the required knowledge evidence for this unit, over the course of 8 classes, working both in and away from class, you will complete a series of tasks and learnings to successfully execute a show control performance for short dramatic work using Ableton Live as a show control device.
