Course Description

This unit specifies the outcome required by frontline managers to facilitate all aspects of team work within the organisation. It involves taking a leadership role in the development of team plans, leading and facilitating team work and actively engaging with the management of the organisation.

1. Establish team performance plan

1.1 Team members are consulted to establish team purpose, roles, responsibilities and accountabilities in accordance with organisational goals, plans and objectives.
1.2 Performance plans are developed in consultation with team members, to establish expected outcomes, outputs, key performance indicators and goals for work team.
1.3 Team members are supported in meeting expected performance outcomes

Element: 2. Develop and facilitate team cohesion 

2.1 Strategies are developed to ensure team members have input into planning, decision making and operational aspects of work team
2.2 Policies and procedures are developed to ensure team members take responsibility for own work and assist others to undertake required roles and responsibilities

Details of Learning Activities

Practical work will be assessed under conditions which simulate the normal work environment.
Progressive assessments will include oral and written demonstration, simulation role-plays, computer assisted learning, observation of group discussions, assignment and projects.
This will include:

• Classroom group discussions to analyse a specified competency and underpinning knowledge
• Consultations with the teacher to identify gaps in one’s skills and knowledge in the specified area
• Maintaining training diary to document training activities and achievements
• Practical demonstrations of achieved competency

Overview of Assessment

Progressive assessments will include oral and written demonstration, simulation role-plays, computer assisted learning, observation of group discussions, assignment and projects. Practical work will be assessed under conditions which simulate the normal work environment.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1. Written group assignment.
Working in teams of 3 or 4, to submit written answers to a range of questions, related to:

  *Teamwork
  *Leading by example
  *Behaving ethically
  *Communicating expectations
  *Roles and responsibilities, and
  *Setting goals.

Questions will usually be distributed in Week 1, for team submission by Week 8.
Topics/Competencies covered will include: teamwork; leading by example; communicating expectations, roles and responsibilities and setting goals.

Assessment Task 2. Written group assignment.
Working in teams of 3 or 4, to submit written answers to a range of questions, related to:


• Team participation
• Accountability and responsibility
• Supporting the team
• Providing feedback
• Dealing with issues and concerns


Questions will usually be distributed in Week 8 for submission by Week 15.
Topics/Competencies covered will include: supporting the team; acting ethically; providing feedback and dealing with issues and concerns.

Assessment Part 3. Oral presentation.
This assessment task requires your team to make an oral presentation based on your written work.
Your oral presentation should be supported by visual aids, and is to be based on the written work prepared for Assignment Parts 1 and 2.
Your team will also need to include in your presentation issues of managing conflict and problem solving and decision making. This may be based on processes that your own team worked through, or you may base it on another case such as an issue dealt with in the media, or another segment of the movie ‘Saving Private Ryan’.
Your team’s presentation will be required to tie the theories learnt back into a workplace setting, under the banner of:


• What implications the situations have for the team leader in the workplace?
The presentations are expected to be made by teams during Weeks 17 and 18.

This course is graded using the following course grades-

80 - 100:   CHD- Competent with High Distinction
70 - 79:     CDI- Competent with Distinction
60 - 69:     CC- Competent with Credit
50 - 59:     CAG- Competency Achieved Graded
0 - 49:       NYC- Not Yet Competent
