Course Description
Checking and proofing translated texts are increasingly being used as a quality assurance process by large translation agencies, companies and public service agencies. This unit covers skills and knowledge required to check and proof the translated text of another translator in terms of accuracy, completeness and suitability for the end use.

There will be simulated activity involving the pruduction of a pamphlet in LOTE for distribution in the community. They will also receive the Word document with the text to be translated into LOTE.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment will be ongoing during the semester, and you will receive feedback on your progress. You will undertake a variety of assessment tasks and activities to assess your level of competence against key elements and performance criteria.
The assessment tasks/activities may include, but are not limited to:
- peer reviewed practical tasks
- real or simulated assignments where translated texts are independently checked and proofed.
- individual/group projects
- action learning tasks.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment Task 1: this is incorporated into the translation project in the unit titled Translate Special Purpose Texts LANG5775C. Please refer to the Part B for Translate Special Purpose Texts for details.
Assessment Task 2: Students will be assigned an independent checking assignment. It may be a transaltion undertaken by another student or a public transaltion from an external source. You will need to refer to checking guidelines and approached to translation criticism from literature and undertake a detailed independent assesment of a translation and report back, either verbally or in writing, to your teacher. You need to explain the process you have used and the issues identified.

Extension of time for submission of assessable work:
Circumstances may arise which prevent students from completing an assessment task on time. In certain circumstances a student may be entitled to apply for an extension to the due date.
Extensions of 7 calendar days or less:
Students seeking an extension of 7 calendar days or less (from the original due date) must complete and lodge an Application for Extension of Submittable Work (7 Calendar Days or less) form and lodge it with the School.
Extensions of greater than 7 working days:
Students seeking an extension of more than 7 calendar days (from the original due date) must lodge an Application for Special Consideration form under the provisions of the Special Consideration Policy , preferably prior to, but no later than 2 working days after the official due date.
