Course Description

This unit deals with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required by a dental hygienist to work in orthodontic practice and perform procedures that are prescribed by an orthodontist and comply with national dental hygiene legislated regulations of practice.
Occupational health, safety and welfare practices and infection control procedures and policy are adhered to at all times. All procedures are performed adhering to the principles of informed consent with operator and patient safety and comfort maintained and ensured at all times.
 

Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

HLTIN403B – Implement and monitor infection control policies and procedures
TAFEDH015 – Manage patients with simple to moderate dental hygiene treatment needs

1. Prepare surgery for orthodontic procedure

2. Prepare patient for the pre-orthodontic treatment phase

3. Place and remove elastomeric separators

5. Remove and replace archwire as prescribed by the orthodontist
