Course Description

This unit of competency describes the application of in-depth level of knowledge of anatomy and physiology required to analyse available health information in relation to dental health.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Compare and contrast distinguishing characteristics of oral epithelial and connective hard and soft tissue in the oral cavity
2.2 Apply the histological characteristics of cells and tissues present in the oral cavity to the form and function of the periodontium
2.3 Identify and apply the histological appearance, composition and function of oral tissues
2.4 Identify the clinical appearance of the oral mucous membrane and gingival tissues and relate to
development, anatomy and physiology and histological structure

3. Analyse and identify developmental stages from zygote to birth for the face, primitive mouth and oral cavity

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Assess and respond to planning dental treatment for a pregnant patient with regard to phases of zygote and foetus development
3.2 Identify the development of the oral cavity, tongue, nasal cavity and teeth
3.3 Identify the embryological development of oral tissues

4.1 Identify and apply basic anatomical and histological organization of the lymphatic system to:
 host-defence mechanisms
 specific versus non-specific immunity

4.2 Identify the structure of micro-organisms and apply to their role in health and disease
4.3 Analyse the principles of sterilisation and disinfection
4.4 Relate oral microorganisms and micro flora to dental biofilm

5.1 Apply detailed understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of disease to take a problem solving approach to plan services to reflect identified health status and address needs

5.3 Document treatment plan in accordance with organisation policies and procedures

Late work that is submitted without an application for an extension (see below) will not be corrected.

• APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF TIME FOR SUBMISSION OF ASSESSABLE WORK - A student may apply for an extension of up to 7 days from the original due date. They must lodge the application form (available www1.rmit.edu.au/students/assessment/extension) at least 24 hours before the due date. The application is lodged with the School Admin Office on Level 3 of Dental Hospital. Students requiring longer extensions must apply for SPECIAL CONSIDERATION.

• For missed assessments such as exams- you (& your doctor if you are sick) must fill out a special consideration form. This form must be lodged online with supporting evidence prior to, or within, 48 hours of the scheduled time of examination http://www1.rmit.edu.au/students/specialconsideration
Note: The Pass mark for the exam is 60%. Assignment will be marked as Satisfactory/Not satisfactory.
Students may be given the opportunity to resubmit the assignment if this is requested by the teacher and approved by the co-ordinator.
Students are required to achieve a Pass grade in both tasks to achieve Competence for this course
