Course Description

This unit of competency describes the application of in-depth level of knowledge of medicine and pharmacology required to analyse, interpret a patient’s medical history and available health information to prevent and/or safely manage a medical emergency.

3. Identify administered drugs and their action in relation to patient medical status and dental implications

3.1 Classify drugs using medical nomenclature and terminology used in pharmacology
3.2 Identify and implement strategies to avoid adverse drug reactions, tolerance and dependence
3.3 Identify drugs taken by patients to ascertain and contradictions for dental treatment

4.1 Identify medical and oral disorders and/or emergencies in the clinic environment
4.2 Identify special considerations required to manage medical and dental disorders and/or emergencies in the clinic environment
4.3 Locate and use emergency equipment as needed in the dental clinic following the emergency protocol

Late work that is submitted without an application for an extension (see below) will not be corrected.

• APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF TIME FOR SUBMISSION OF ASSESSABLE WORK - A student may apply for an extension of up to 7 days from the original due date. They must lodge the application form (available www1.rmit.edu.au/students/assessment/extension) at least 24 hours before the due date. The application is lodged with the School Admin Office on Level 3 of Dental Hospital. Students requiring longer extensions must apply for SPECIAL CONSIDERATION.

• For missed assessments such as exams- you (& your doctor if you are sick) must fill out a special consideration form. This form must be lodged online with supporting evidence prior to, or within, 48 hours of the scheduled time of examination www1.rmit.edu.au/students/specialconsiderationNote: The Pass mark for the exam is 60%. Assignment will be marked as Satisfactory/Not satisfactory.
Students may be given the opportunity to resubmit the assignment if this is requested by the teacher and approved by the co-ordinator.
Students are required to achieve a Pass grade in both tasks to achieve Competence for this course
