Purpose of the Program

The Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours)/Bachelor of Business (Management) has been specifically designed to meet the current and future needs of the mechanical engineering industry. Many of the key roles in mechanical engineering organisations are held by engineering managers. After initially working as mechanical engineers, they move to positions where they are primarily concerned with management. They are involved with supervising and developing staff, planning, achieving organisational objectives and maintaining a positive and motivated workforce and environment. These activities are common to all engineering activities in the public or private sector.

The objectives of the program are to prepare you for a career of leadership in industry that depends on mechanically-based technology.

The program consists of core mechanical engineering and management courses, and technical option courses from the two disciplines. The technical option courses on offer enable you to develop specialist skills in areas of particular interest to you.

Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours)

The overall objective of the program is for its graduates to be employable and effective mechanical engineers in a national and international context. The program is designed to prepare them for a wide range of career possibilities by developing particular graduate attributes which will be of on-going benefit to them, industry and society as a whole.

As a graduate of this program you should be well-prepared to practise effectively as a professional engineering. Through your studies you will have demonstrated the ability to utilise fundamental knowledge and skills in mathematics and the sciences underpinning engineering.  You will have demonstrated sound skills and appropriate understanding of disciplines relevant to mechanical engineering and its practise. You will have demonstrated suitable design skills, appropriate creativity, intellectual discipline, and professional skills relevant to working with others.

You will have demonstrated ability to communicate their ideas in a way appropriate to their profession and also in a general way appropriate to communication with the wider community.  You will also have demonstrated that you can learn in a self-directed way that supports professional extension in your working life, and adaptation through technological and social change.

The Mechanical Engineering program as a whole has a real world focus with a problem / project based active learning approach.  The first two years of the program are common with the Automotive Engineering program offered by the School of Engineering.  In these years students of the programs are exposed to fundamentals of engineering sciences, mathematics, engineering design, and engineering professional practise.  In the later years of the program, specialist mechanical elective courses are offered with a wide variety of staff interest and expertise. The academic staff members teaching the course are mechanical engineering practitioners and together with the specialist knowledge they offer, the program is designed to provide its students with a number of opportunities for industrial interaction.

You will undertake a capstone experience in the final year courses OENG1167 Engineering Capstone Project Part A and OENG1168 Engineering Capstone Project Part B, in which you will conduct a research project that can be analytical, experimental, design-focused or computational in nature (or some combination of these).

Bachelor of Business (Management)

The Bachelor of Business (Management) program provides you with critical and broad ranging studies to enable you to enter graduate positions in administration and management.  The program provides you with opportunities to develop the required knowledge and outcomes to operate successfully in contemporary environments.  You will be able to apply the knowledge and skills gained in the core areas of management in a diverse range of political, social, environmental and economic contexts.

This program involves the exploration and application of management theory through problem-based and work-relevant activities which may include face-to-face, online, self-directed, collaborative and individual learning experience and is delivered on-campus.

In the final year of the program, the capstone experience course BUSM4546 Organisational Experience provides the culmination of the knowledge, skills and applied work practice experiences that prepare you to transit into business world.

On successful completion of the program, you will be able to work within a wide range of organisations and industries in varied roles, and career entry positions, such as business administration, management consulting and strategy analysis.  The program will provide you with a basis for further development of your knowledge and skills in management, and for further study in business and management.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours) / Bachelor of Business (Management) is primarily delivered face to face at the City and Bundoora campuses. While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, others are delivered online.
