Purpose of the Program

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) provides with knowledge and skills in the major disciplines of Laboratory Medicine.  This program with its professional practice component is designed to provide a qualification which will fully prepare you for employment in diagnostic pathology or medical research locally, nationally and internationally. 

During Year 3 and 4 of the program you will undertake the following capstone experiences:

  • MEDS2202 Professional Practice Laboratory Medicine 1
  • MEDS2203 Advanced Laboratory Medicine 1

The program is also a pathway to postgraduate studies in Laboratory Medicine, such as PhD by research.

Delivery mode is face to face and requires on campus attendance.

Graduates of the RMIT AD012 Associate Degree in Applied Science will be guaranteed entry into the BP147P21 Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) program and will receive credit for 10 courses (120 credit points) (Note: A standard year of full-time undergraduate study at RMIT University is 96 credit points) 

NB: While the total value of the credit offered exceeds 1 standard year of full time study, the amount of time required to complete the remaining study may exceed 3 years.

Graduates of the RMIT C5388 Diploma of Laboratory Technology program will be guaranteed entry into the BP147P21 Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) program. 

Graduates of the RMIT C5388 Diploma of Laboratory Technology program who successfully complete certain option courses, are guaranteed entry into the BP147P21 Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) with 96 credit points of credit. As a successful graduate of BP147P21 Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine), you may (upon application) be eligible for credit into other RMIT University programs. Please check with the admissions officer of your program of choice. For example, on graduation you may wish to apply for MC158, the Master of Laboratory Medicine.

Entrance requirements

This program has been discontinued. The last intake for students was Semester 2 2022

BP147P21 Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) program will be formally discontinued from Semester 1, 2024 and all students will be transferred into the BH129 Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) program from then on.

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of Biology or Chemistry; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of any Mathematics or Physics

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent.

The program is accredited by the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS). Graduates of AIMS-accredited programs are eligible to apply for registration through the AIMS (www.aims.org.au) – further details on this are available from the AIMS.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
