Purpose of the Program

The Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy is designed to provide you with the underpinning knowledge and practical skills required to safely and effectively perform your roles and responsibilities as a Myotherapist to industry standards.

This program facilitates the development of the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for:

  • Employing a holistic 'client-centred' approach to working in a clinic
  • Work team cooperation
  • Quality customer/client service
  • Problem solving
  • Effective written and verbal communication

Health and safety issues are stressed throughout the program with a major focus on:

  • Infection control
  • Hygiene practices
  • Quality control and quality assurance methodologies

The program is designed to provide a broad-based education and training program for the learner that enhances integration of knowledge, attitudes and skills gained in the off-the-job training with real world experiences gained as employees in the health care workplace.

You'll develop the advanced skills and knowledge to extend your career opportunities as a myotherapist, including:

  • myofascial dry needling, functional movement and corrective exercises
  • advanced hands-on techniques for treatment of a wide range of conditions and pathologies
  • further clinical knowledge in assessment procedures and protocols, orthopaedic assessment and treatment techniques, neuro-dynamic assessment and treatment, and treatment planning
  • comprehensive understanding of how to discover and implement current research in your everyday practice

Articulation and pathways

Pathways refer to related programs for which you may be eligible once you have graduated from your current program. Upon successful completion in the Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy at RMIT University you might then consider pathways into other health sciences within the higher education sector, such as:

  • Chiropractic
  • Exercise Science
  • Osteopathy

At this point in time there are no formal articulation pathways to these disciplines.

Entrance requirements

You must have successfully completed the Diploma of Remedial Massage (training package HLT52015 or HLT50307) for entry into this program.

You must also hold a Working with Children Check. Police check and a range of immunisations before undertaking clinical components of this program.

External accreditation and industry links

RMIT University through its Industry Advisory Committee, consults with industry directly.  RMIT has been at the forefront of Remedial Massage and Myotherapy training and education for over 20 years and has built up an extensive network of industry links. 

On graduation from this program students can apply for membership with any of the ten professional associations, including:

All professional organisations offer student registrations. Graduates are eligible to register for provider number status with private health insurers and WorkCover.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
