Purpose of the Program

This program will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the engineering disciplines that constitute the life cycle of the product automobile.  It will expose you to state-of-the-art infrastructure and different work ethics, by providing you with the opportunity to carry out work experience or research projects at multi-national automotive companies worldwide.  The program is international in character; it aims to provide you with advanced technical and generic capabilities which will enhance your chances of employment in the global automotive industry sector.

There are two distinct and interrelated specialist automotive areas of activity in the global automotive industry sector. 

Automotive Design and Development includes developed automotive industries that are knowledge intensive and with high value added products and services (e.g., Australia, Germany, USA, Japan).  
Automotive Manufacturing Engineering Processes include emerging automotive industries where the focus is process intensive, relies on economies of scale and the pursuit of cutting-edge manufacturing technologies (e.g., China, India, Thailand).  

In catering for local and international students this program offers the flexibility for specialisation in either sector. It will instil in you the specialised automotive engineering skills that are currently in short supply, but are increasingly in high demand by the automotive industry.  

The objective of this program is to educate you as a leading professional automotive engineer who is able to: 

Analyse complex automotive systems and develop new systems to ensure enhanced vehicle operations
Find innovative solutions from an array of possibilities through systematic problem solving and system design methodologies
Analyse the automotive product from cradle to grave and adapt automotive design and manufacturing systems to deliver value for all stakeholders
Conceive novel designs for challenging problems and opportunities
Communicate with a wide range of key stakeholders in professional and effective manner
Lead, build and work with teams with trust and respect

The program requires in-person attendance, but also takes advantage of the capabilities of the online learning management system that is available to all students and provides scope for collaboration and remote access.

This program is primarily delivered in face-to-face mode at the City Campus. While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, others are delivered online.

Not applicable. This is an exit point only from the Master of Engineering (International Automotive Engineering).

Entrance requirements

Entry to this program is via MC230 Master of Engineering (International Automotive Engineering). Students in the Masters degree who wish to exit the Masters before completion, may be eligible to take out the intermediary award of GD164 Graduate Diploma in International Automotive Engineering.

External accreditation and industry links

External Accreditation
The Graduate Diploma in International Automotive Engineering is not accredited, although it has been developed to align with the Engineers Australia accreditation framework. Engineers Australia is the professional body responsible for the accreditation of higher education programs that prepare students to practise as professional engineers. Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in International Automotive Engineering may be eligible to apply for membership of Engineers Australia. More details on membership of Engineers Australia can be found here.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.

Online learning tools and content

You can access online learning tools and content for your program and associated courses at myRMIT: www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit.

The School has many laboratories, often with specialised equipment, to support the relevant teaching and learning activities, and most of these laboratories have been upgraded in recent years to ensure that you have access to modern computers and equipment that you are likely to use in industry.  RMIT has a planned budget to ensure that all computers are upgraded on a regular basis (currently every three years).
