Purpose of the Program

The Undergraduate Certificate in Food Technology and Nutrition program is about the science of manufacturing food and making it safe and nutritious.

This program will provide you with the  foundational knowledge to pursue further study via the Bachelor of Science (Food Technology and Nutrition) which will prepare you for a career in the food industry. This program is designed to build a foundation to communicate effectively and excel in sciences via oral, written or visual forms, develop analysis and decision making skills in a team environment, build a solid chemistry foundation to understand the chemistry of biological systems and build chemical laboratory skills. 

Your learning experiences will involve a broad mix of study modes, including online lectorials, tutorials, practical classes, studios, project work and seminars, using face-to-face, online, intensive, and other flexible delivery mechanisms.

This program is delivered online, however some activities may require face-to-face attendance in RMIT City or Bundoora campuses.

Articulation and pathways

Graduates of the Undergraduate Certificate in Food Technology and Nutrition are guaranteed entry into the Bachelor of Science (Food Technology and Nutrition) (BP199) and will receive 48 credit points.

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 — a study score of at least 20 in Mathematics (any) and Chemistry, and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page.

External accreditation and industry links

This program is not accredited by any professional body. This program does not qualify graduates for any level of membership or registration for practice.

The School has a very strong Industry Advisory Committee that is the main link to industry. The committee meets regularly and provides feedback on the currency of the program, the changing needs of industry and has input into the design of new programs. Our industry partners also actively contribute to the School through participation in Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) courses, seminars, marketing events, industry awards and scholarships

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
