Approach to learning and assessment

During the program you will experience a variety of teaching and learning approaches in the courses you undertake. These approaches reflect the unique aims of each course to achieve the learning outcomes. Your interests and the value of this program to your future career prospects are enhanced by your engagement in learning activities and taking responsibility for your own learning. A range of teaching approaches is used in addition to lectures. These include methods such as:

• Case-based learning engages you in critical thinking and decision making about realistic problems in a business discipline
• Project based learning engage you in design, problem solving, decision making, and investigative activities
• Problem-based learning engages you in problem analysis, research and provision of solutions
• Cooperative learning enables you to work in collaborative or team-based tasks
• Reflective learning allows you to reflect on your learning experiences

The objective is to encourage flexible and independent learning and to develop students who not only understand the theory and concepts, but can also readily apply them.

Class presentations, group assignments are used extensively to develop personal qualities including clear thinking and resourcefulness and to extend your professional skills to enable you to work in a team and to perform under pressure.

Assessment in the Bachelor of Business (Management) is designed to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities. You will find that various forms of assessment will be used throughout the program since the assessment you receive will be appropriate to the objectives and student learning outcomes for each course. Successfully completing the assessment tasks ensures the professional accounting bodies and prospective employers of a level of achievement in the capabilities outlined in the program. Assessment in this program may include:

• Formal examinations: to provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding and application of fundamental principles to either practical or theoretical issues;
• Assignments and projects: may be completed individually or in teams. They will provide you with opportunities to develop your abilities in communication, research and analysis, and problem solving;
• Research projects: which assess your ability to assimilate, analyse, critically reflect on information and your written communication skills;
• In-class tests: to provide you with timely feedback on your understanding within a course and allow feedback to assist you in further developing your skills and capabilities during the semester;
• Formal presentations: enable the development of verbal communication skills and organisational abilities;
• Portfolio – enable you to report and reflect what you have learnt and to keep collection of a range of models, examples, articles and websites that you will take forward as a resource in your professional life.

Work integrated learning

As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program, you will be provided with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. The designated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) courses in this program are BUSM4549 Organisational Experience (12 credit points)and BUSM4188 Leadership (12 credit points). These courses will provide you with opportunities to apply your academic skills to a work-based context.

In particular you will:

• undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice; and
• be involved in authentic engagement with partner organisations that includes industry feedback.

These learning opportunities may be in the form of industry based projects, simulations or placements.

Program transition plan

Changes from Trimester 3, 2026:

Minor: Global Business

• The course BAFI3182 Financial Markets and Institutions has been removed.

• The course BUSM4699 Cross Cultural Management has been added.

Transition plan:

• If you have completed BAFI3182 Financial Markets and Institutions prior to Trimester 3 2026, this course will appear on your transcript as part of the Global Business Minor completion, and you will not need to complete BUSM4699 Cross Cultural Management.

Changes from Trimester 2, 2024:

Please note that the International Business Minor has been removed and replaced with the Global Business Minor.

The below courses that were part of the International Business Minor will also appear in the Global Business Minor, and will remain the same:

1. BUSM3311 Global Business

2. BAFI3182 Financial Markets and Institutions

3. BUSM4692 Global Corporate Responsibility

The 4th course, ECON1269 Business in the Globalised Economy will be replaced with OMGT2321 Global Trade Operations under this new minor.

If you have already completed ECON1269 Business in the Globalised Economy, you do not need to complete OMGT2321 Global Trade Operations and will complete under the old International Business Minor title.

If you have not already completed ECON1269 Business in the Globalised Economy, you will need to complete OMGT2321 Global Trade Operations and complete under the new Global Business Minor title.

The BP217 Bachelor of Business (Management) program will be formally discontinued from Trimester 1, 2023, and the final intake for admission into the BP217 Bachelor of Business (Management) program will be Trimester 3, 2022. The program will be taught out to current students until Trimester 2, 2028. If you anticipate that you will successfully complete this program by the end of 2021, these changes do not apply to you.

Current students who will not finish the program by the end of 2021 have the option to either:

Option 1

Recommended for students in the second or third year of your current program.

Remain in your current program and complete the program by the end of Trimester 2, 2028.

Please refer to the course teach-out schedule for your current program which will be provided to your RMIT student email to help you plan your enrolment.

If you commenced the program before Trimester 1 2022, please refer to the following transition rules, which are Course Title changes only:

• If you have completed LAW2447 Commercial Law, you do not need to complete LAW2447 Business Law, as this is a course title change only.

• If you have completed BUSM2301 Organisational Analysis, you do not need to complete BUSM2301 Organisations, as this is a course title change only.

• If you have completed BUSM4188 Leadership and Decision Making, you do not need to complete BUSM4188 Leadership, as this is a course title change only.

• If you have completed BUSM3309 Strategic Management, you do not need to complete BUSM3309 Strategy, as this is a course title change only.

• If you have completed BUSM4553 Creativity, Innovation and Design, you do not need to complete BUSM4553 Innovation Management, as this is a course title change only.

• If you have completed BUSM4549 Management in Practice, you do not need to complete BUSM4549 Organisational Experience, as this is a course title change only.

Option 2

Recommended for students in the first year of your current program.

Transfer to BP343 Bachelor of Business or any other available RMIT program. Note: entry will be subject to maintaining satisfactory academic progress.

Please contact Student Connect to discuss transferring into the BP343 Bachelor of Business.

If you have been awarded sponsorship or scholarship, you will be required to obtain approval from RMITVN Scholarship team or your sponsor before you are eligible to be accepted into the new program.

Credit will be assessed on an individual basis and where possible, credit will be granted with grades (including fail grades). Note: you will not be required to submit any supporting documentation in your application (i.e., transcripts, qualifications).
