Approach to learning and assessment

The teaching approach in this program is designed to foster your development as an independent learner so that you will be able to extend your capabilities once you graduate. Courses are primarily undertaken on campus, and are delivered via lectorial, seminar, tutorial, workshop, practical session, site visit, the provision of online materials and activities or work placement. You will be expected to complete all prescribed out-of-class learning activities in preparation for scheduled face-to-face and online classes and encouraged to extend your learning through additional recommended readings and online activities.

Courses in the program use a combination of face-to-face, online, and self-directed learning. Course materials such as learning activities, learning resources and assessment details are provided through RMIT's Learning Management System; Canvas.

If you choose the Digital Communication and/or the Public Relations major, you will undertake an industry internship. This will provide you with an environment to demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as your communication skills and knowledge in applied and experiential settings. Completing the practical side of the internship as well as the academic assessment will require you to draw on and apply knowledge, and skills developed through your RMIT program.

Throughout this program you will undertake a range of embedded Career Development Learning and assessment activities aimed at enhancing your knowledge, capabilities and career awareness to prepare for and manage your career throughout your life.

Assessment
Assessment is designed to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities. Various forms of assessment are used throughout the program, including assessment where you will perform real-world tasks and demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes that you need to apply to problems and situations in contemporary work and life.

The assessment you undertake are appropriate to the objectives and student learning outcomes for each course. Assessment may include quizzes, essays/reports, class presentations, individual and group projects, addressing client briefs, research projects, practical assignments, and reflective journals. RMIT’s policy on assessment and assessment flexibility can be found here: https://policies.rmit.edu.au/document/view.php?id=7

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing students with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience. As a student enrolled in an RMIT program you will:

interact with industry and community when undertaking this activity
complete an activity in a work context or situation that may include teamwork with other students from different disciplines.
underpin your learning with feedback from interactions and contexts distinctive to workplace experiences

The Bachelor of Professional Communication has strong relationships across a range of industry related disciplines and community partners. Throughout the program, you will engage with industry stakeholders in a variety of ways, work with industry partners and explore different discipline contexts.

In this program, you will be doing specific courses that focus on work integrated learning (WIL).
