Approach to learning and assessment

The learning philosophy in UniStart is focused on preparing you for a seamless transition into a range of higher education programs. It develops a mix of discipline based skills and knowledge and general study skills in a supportive, flexible and learner-centred environment. It aims to assist you to become an independent, critical and lifelong learner that is also capable of working collaboratively to maximise your potential for success in a university context.

You will undertake a range of course activities such as task- and problem-based learning projects, group work, independent and group research, case studies, class discussions and structured reflective practice. You are encouraged to be an active course participant and work closely with your teachers to seek advice about course content, and assessment and study methods.

The purpose of assessment in this program is to assist you and your teachers to monitor your development and support your ongoing learning. Assessment will be ongoing throughout the program with regular tasks giving you the opportunity to practice and demonstrate your skills and understanding of recent subject matter.

The assessment will resemble the tasks expected of you in higher education, they will allow you to both practice and demonstrate your readiness for higher education. The tasks will entail:

  • Reflection that will help you to clarify your understanding the significance of the skills you are learning and how they can be best applied in specific contexts.  
  • Group Projects that will require you to work effectively with others which is important not only for learning in a Global University but also essential for most professions and industries.
  • Writing and Presentation tasks that allow you to develop your various capacity to articulate and communicate your thinking and ideas.
  • Tasks that can be relatively unique in the context of a discipline. These tasks may entail designing something using a specific process, applying specialised knowledge to solve a problem, predicting or evaluating an outcome, undertaking an analysis and reporting results.

Feedback will be provided following each assessment to assist you to monitor your progress and continuously improve. There will be a major assessment task at the end of each course requiring you to demonstrate and apply what you have learned during the semester.
