Course Description

This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to produce a short screen based documentary. You will explore aspects of documentary production such as historical developments and contemporary approaches in documentary making, including ethical and cultural issues.

You will develop a short documentary as part of a team and through this process you will learn about image sequences as story telling tools, image composition and sound recording, as they apply to monologue and/or dialogue-based screen media.

Program Learning Outcomes

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) of the AD017 Associate Degree in Screen and Media:

1. produce screen and media content with high production values for a range of platforms and environments 2. apply industry relevant knowledge and skills to devise, develop and build contemporary screen and media content for diverse audiences and contexts 3. apply and creatively adapt theoretical and technical knowledge and skills in screen and media production to your practice or future study 4. identify, analyse and reflect on relevant trends in screen and media production in both local and international contexts. 5. demonstrate critical thinking and innovation when identifying and responding to problems in diverse contexts within screen and media production 6. communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders about your discipline 7. work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness. 8. apply initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making as a writer, editor or future student.


Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

1. analyse historical and contemporary approaches to developing documentaries

2. identify ethical and cultural issues in the development of documentaries

3. discuss technical concepts and requirements for producing video and audio media for a documentary

4. apply a range of technical skills and work effectively as a team member to produce a short documentary
