Course Description
In this course, you will learn about the impact of colonisation, intergenerational trauma, and contemporary social factors on the social, cultural, environmental, and economic determinants of health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You will explore how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultural strengths, knowledge, and practices contribute to holistic wellbeing and healing at individual and community levels. You will develop an understanding of principles of cultural safety, cultural sensitivity, and respectful engagement to apply in your professional practice across health care policy, service delivery, research, and community health promotion.

- Describe and compare health status across local & wider Australian populations with reference to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples
- Explain the impact of history and contemporary society on the social, cultural, and environmental determinants of health, from the perspective of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples;
3. Discuss key health issues that Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples experience in 21st century Australia;
4. Identify cultural strengths and practices that contribute to wellbeing and healing among Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities;
5. Describe local and national programs and initiatives that are improving health outcomes in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities;
6. Outline your own professional plan in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander cultural competence for your future health practice and research
Overview of Learning Activities
This course will use a range of learning activities including lectures and tutorial sessions, online resources, and self-directed learning. Throughout the course you will work both individually and in teams. Delivery will be a mix of face-to-face and online.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through the RMIT Student Website.
