Course Description
Do you want to break into the publishing, arts or communications industries? Make a living as a freelance writer or editor? Be strategic about your new creative career? This class covers everything from effective networking to making contracts, managing competing deadlines and creating professional business plans. You’ll learn from industry professionals and build the skills and knowledge you need to treat the business of writing and editing...like a business.
This course is titled Working in the Arts Industry and comprises two competencies, which are co-delivered and co-assessed:

Overview of Assessment
Assessment is ongoing throughout the course. Assessment will incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of knowledge and skills and will include participation in class exercises, oral presentations and practical writing tasks. Full assessment briefs will be provided.
Assessment Tasks
Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace. To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.
You should refer to the assessment brief which is available through Canvas for full assessment criteria.
Assessment Task 1: Creative Writing
Due: Week 7
To complete this assessment task, you will create an original creative work using any medium (including photography), which you then will use as inspiration for a piece of writing (300 words, plus or minus 10%).
Acceptable mediums include art, photography, video, collage, music or lyrics, sculpture, design, fashion etc.
Assessment Task 2: Industry Portfolio
Due: Week 11 In this assignment, you will be acting as managing editor and will engage with contributing author. Your role involves discussing timelines, deliverables and author changes. Assessment Task 3: Knowledge quiz Due: Week 13This assessment is a short-answer knowledge assessment designed to assess your knowledge of working effectively in the creative arts.
Assessment Task 4: Attend an industry event
Due: Week 15
You will attend one industry event of your choosing, approved by your teacher, to develop your networking skills and identify employment and further industry learning opportunities.
Once you have achieved competency for all assessments in a unit of competency, you will receive an overall result. If you have not completed an assessment task to a satisfactory standard, you will be given an opportunity to resubmit that task within one week of receiving feedback from your teacher. If the resubmission is deemed unsatisfactory, the matter will be referred to the Program Coordinator.
