Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assist clients to identify their rights, voice their needs and concerns and realise their interests, rights and needs.   This unit applies to workers of all levels in a range of health or community services settings who provide services using a human rights based approach and have direct interaction with clients.

This unit is delivered and assessed in a cluster with CHCMHS008: Promote and Facilitate Self Advocacy

1.1 Discuss the rights and responsibilities of all parties with client

1.2 Provide client with researched, relevant and timely information on their rights and responsibilities

1.3 Assist clients to identify their own interests, rights, needs, choices and responsibilities

1.4 Identify when rights are infringed or not being met

1.5 Provide client with information on available options for meeting their rights and needs and assist them to identify their preferred option

Overview of Assessment

This unit is part of an integrated program. You must demonstrate critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit. 

Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks. You may be assessed by: 
• Oral or written questioning 
• Oral presentations 
• Assignments and projects 
• Direct observation of work practice 

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions, through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation. 

Regular attendance is necessary.

If you have a long-term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the Program Co-ordinator or the Equitable Learning Services team if you would like to find out more.  

Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on Canvas.  

 

You will be given two (2) attempts for each assessment to demonstrate the required knowledge and skills. A third (3rd) attempt can only be offered after discussions between teacher and the Program Coordinator and is not automatic. Resubmissions beyond two (2) attempts are at the discretion of the teacher and/or coordinator.


Assessment Tasks

There are 4 assessment task for this unit which are:

Assessment 1: Knowledge Questions - short answer question to demonstrate knowledge and learning

Assessment 2: Role Play where you will practice skills and demonstrate working with a client making a complaint in a simulated workplace

Assessment 3: Role Play where you will practice skills and demonstrate working and advocating for a client

Assessment 4: Working in small groups to create a resource that promotes self-advocacy
